Wow....Makar is such a great player - DraftandDestroy
Nice deke in open ice.
15 mins into this series, it is already clear how formidable the Avs are going to be. |

Playoff hockey’s been good so far. Avalanche look great. Fast and highend talented. Joe Sakic’s done a great job, at one point a few years ago people were calling for his head but he’s done well on the draft floor and built a strong strong team. |

That was a dazzling first period. They look so damn fast and so skilled. Blues are a good defensive team and they gave up 18 shots in the first and Rantanen should have potted that into empty net. |

.@nhlFlyers center @KevinPHayes12 will need core-muscle surgery, which may take place in the next week, per GM Chuck Fletcher.

Is this why he wasn’t our lead scorer? |

Philly White out, I absolutely agree with your point about the all Florida series. Talked to my buddies while that game was playing and was saying similar things to them. Those teams are built well and are well rounded. Our Flyers wouldn’t stand a chance. Unfortunately, we are still a ways away from those teams. |

No, but it explains a lot, he really wasn't himself this year. |

Watched some more playoff games last night and it just makes it more and more obvious how poorly built the Flyers are. I have Carolina and Colorado in the Finals in my bracket and I have the Avs winning it all. It's so apparent the speed and physicality that most of these teams that made the playoffs have. The Flyers basically need to revamp their entire forward group, but the million dollar question is how do you do that when you have 30 million in cap space tied up in 4 forwards(Giroux, Voracek, JVR and Hayes)? Good luck Chucky! |

I think the Flyers lack physicality way more than speed. When they skate they are fine, but they get manhandled way too often in all three zones. They are a soft team.

While I agree these teams playing in playoffs are step above us... at the same time, I felt last year we always played to our competition’s level. Even with Tampa, we had crazy comebacks and took it to OT. Idk I feel last year our guys stepped it up when we faced the best of the best. But we certainly didn’t match the physicality of the Habs when we played in the bubble. Same with Isles. |

Hints at a possible reason for his decline in play this season. |

I agree with this. That’s why they shouldn’t be pursuing “pie in the sky” D men like Jones or Hamilton. A tough physical stay at home D man who can clear the crease will help them at a much lower cost. A physical forward who can play without being a liability is what they need up front. It should be much more obtainable than the “pure sniper” that everyone wants. |

During a "regular" season this only comes in to play every few games.
But during this season, and in the playoffs last year, we saw what happens when they have to play a physical team game in and game out. It wears you down. They need to be able to wear down other teams, but they can't. Simple physics matters.
Thing is, they need to draft for skill, and use the FA trade route to get size and grit.

Absolutely. If the FA route doesn’t work it’s time to trade some of that “soft skill” to open the cap space.
These playoffs might be the most physical in a long time since all players are going in with a minimum of 25 fewer games of wear and tear on their bodies. Should be great to watch. |

And the "size" they have for the most part is not very physical. Myers, JVR, Voracek, Hayes, Sanheim, Patrick...all these guys are big and heavy, but don't play a very big or heavy game. Especially Myers, that guy should be a bear to play against and he isn't.
