I’m trying to check on this. His draft “clock” for signing is still showing an august expiration date until he’s a free agent. It would take a change on that which would have to be approved by the NHL (possibly the PA too). At this point, Ken Kal and others on the media side are still saying his rights are expiring this year.

Normally I go straight to the CBA for matters like this, but the legalese in the relevant portion of the CBA -- 8.6 (c), to be precise -- is particularly inscrutable in this case.

That said, the final line of 8.6 (c) (v) seems to be crucial here:

As a general matter, the above provisions were not intended to cut off, and shall not have the effect of cutting off, a Club's exclusive negotiating rights during the period that a Player remains in college.

Emphasis mine.

Capfriendly's FAQ is marginally more helpful, but still not exactly simple to parse out.

As best I can tell, the short answer here is that if KP stays in college, then the Red Wings continue to hold his rights until next year. That said, if he decides not to use that last year of eligibility (or Quinnipiac doesn't offer it to him; individual colleges apparently can opt out) he does become a free agent this year. So until he declares otherwise it seems wise to assume an August 15, 2021 deadline until further notice.

Best Swede Available, Jeremy!

Edit: Reference to the Wallstedt pick discussion from the last blog. You're so prolific with the posts that I'm one behind.

Nice! Thanks for that. Yeah, it’s feast or famine right now so I had to bump up some extra posts. I’m trying to put links for the past 5+ entries now so anyone can know if they missed something.

How Swede it is, indeed. We’ll celebrate with some of Z’s cream filled Swedish balls. (Not sure if they still sell those over here or not)

Ok, i was able to get ahold of someone who participated in the media call yesterday. . It’s correct, Wings will retain Keith Petruzzelli’s rights if he opts for another year. However, there is already information that KP doesn’t want to sign with Detroit. He’s likely moving on for whatever reason.

Disappointing but not entirely unexpected.

Not to bothered by it. Very few college players who play 4+ years ever become worth anything worthwhile.

Also, anyone notice Mantha back to his floating self? I say this and he will probably score now but he is barely moving out there.

He had an assist in the first game, had 7 shots on net the second, and has an assist tonight. He’s hardly floating…
