McDavid is a better player. Mathews I think is prob the second best forward in the world. I think Hedman is the 2nd best player personally - Jkuzzi

not disagreeing. just that the playoffs are what the game's all about and let's be honest, at this moment, McDavid is not the best player in the world. he had a horrible series.
can't just dismiss the playoffs. - RealityChecker
I wouldn't pick McDavid 1st if I were starting a team assuming contracts stay the same. Gimme Nate Mackinnkn all day long at what 6 mill
I'm not sure McDavid and hos contract would be in my top 5 or 10 even
Mackinnon at 6.3
Hedman 7.7
Pastranak 6.6
Barkov 5.9
Heck even draisaitl at 9.5
All of them before mcjesus |

You’re joking, right? He’s not even the best player on his team. I think Marner is a better “player”, although Matthews is obviously a better goal scorer, the best in the league in fact.
McDavid, MacKinnon and Draisaitl are the best three forwards in the league, full stop! |

i think both you and VHG hit on some great points.
as good as CM is, it takes a whole team to win in the playoffs. you need the stars to step it up and lead on the ice but you need the role players to complement the stars.
when one element is lacking, it generally weakens the other. weak supporting cast and the superstars can often get shut down. weak superstars make the supporting cast look even worse as the role players are asked to contribute more than they can/should.
so you need to assemble a team that values both and when a superstar sees that lacking or a clear lack of direction from management or bad moves that let players go.... as VHG said.... it won't be long before the superstar starts to think that it would be easier finding a "complete" team elsewhere. |

Barkov is 1 point under a ppg in the playoffs, Mcdavid is 1 point over a ppg in the playoffs.
Mackinnon has 63 points in 44 career playoff games. - NorthNuck
I'd take Nate over Barkov but I'd take barkov over McDavid and Draisaitl when including salary. Barkov may be the most complete player in the league
Nate and Barkov combined salary wise is 300k less that what McDavid makes yikes |

MacKinnon is such a whiny little female dog though. Incredible player but I wouldn’t pick him above the rest. Not to build a team around. |

McDavid is the best regular season forward. He seems easy to shut down in the playoffs when things get tighter and more physical, and he doesn't play defense so he's not going to win anything on his own like that.
In my opinion, MacKinnon is the best player across the boards right now. Dude is magical with the puck and an absolute beast. |

He's the most valuable forward in the league given his cap hit. He also has a significantly higher ppg average than pretty much every other star forward in the league.
If I were building a team he would be my first choice |

I agree, Hedman is a gem. I would alway build from the goalie out. Regardless of the quality of your forwards, if you don’t have goaltending and reliable defence then your team won’t achieve poop. Edmonton is the perfect example.
People complain about Crosby whining but Nate is 10 times worse. No thanks. |

Hockey’s a team game, often the role players make or break your cup chances. Toronto has a much deeper team than Edmonton but that imo doesn’t make Matthews a better player.
Steve Yzerman was in his 30’s before he found playoff success, and he’s one of the greatest players in the league’s history. |

Pittsburgh won 3 cups with suspect defense and (at times) goaltending. |

I don't disagree, Mcdavid is clearly on another talent level in comparison to the rest, but I think there is a distinction between the most talented player and the best hockey player. |

McDavid has 22 points in 21 playoff games, I’d say he’s doing what he’s paid to do, put up points. Sure he’s a turnover machine, like most highly offensive players, they’re always trying to create and they have the puck a lot, so ya, they turn it over.
Joe Sakic had 11 points in 12 playoff games seven years into his career. These guys are young, McDavid and Draisaitl, there’s not enough depth around them and their goaltending was sh it. They’re not responsible for building the team around them. |

i'd build from the D out.
i think the peak goalie lifespan is too short to build around. you need quality tending for sure but it's too difficult to start the build from that position. takes a long time to develop and you're not sure if you'll have "good" or "elite" tending for several seasons.

He’s going to have to evolve his game to become more aware defensively, for sure. He needs to become the hunter, not the hunted.....Bob Gainey told that to Mike Modano. |

i've been mostly poking fun of CM for sport but i agree with you.
even if you look at the sedins, they are close to a point per game pace in the playoffs after 2007. 58 points in 62 game = 0.94ppg for henrik. |
