When was the last time a top 3 scorer in the league was traded? Draisaitl is by far the best player in the trade as of now. Buch is getting traded for a center that we need. KK is the big name player with potential, Chytl is the center, Nils and Jones are definitely unknowns. Does Nils even sign here? In 4 or 5 years it might seem like an over payment but we get a top 3 Center in the league at age 25 who is cost controlled for another 5 yrs at an incredible reasonable cap hit.. Those dont come around that often.

I don’t actually think the Oilers will trade Draisaitl, but I think that’s what they need to become a better team. |

if they did this trade, 4 year window to win the Cup starts immediately

Speaking of centers, it looks like WPG put PLD on the wing, is he someone we target and reunite with Panarin? He had a disappointing season but WPG gave up a lot to get him. I could see him getting reunited with Panarin and his game really taking off. I’m sure they’d want Kakko+ in return though. |

That’s the flip side, it closes our 10 year window to a 4-5 year window |

Most definitely and I bet they would have at least a good 5-6 year run. |

I can almost guarantee that Kakko would turn into Draisatl in Edmonton

Im a big Kakko fan. Regardless of his numbers right now I think he’s going to become an excellent 2 way 65+ pt player. |

look at Draisatl's first year and see, it's definitely possible for a turnaround like that

U could just see it in his game last year, the progress from the year before was night and day. He had those moments where u said, wow, he’s going to be good. With some physical maturity and age he’s going to develop into who we thought we were drafting. |

KK isnt a center. We would get a top 3 center in the league for 5 years. You gotta give in order to get. |

I dont see him staying in Winni. If the team knows they cant resign him then anything is possible.

I think with the cap, no team realistically has a 10 year window anymore. The best you can hope for is a Pitt/Wash where even in downyear you look pretty spunky and can win in the regular season. That's not really contending though.

This. There aren't many comparable trades in hockey history to really go off of, but you'd almost have to think the return would have to be slightly under Lindros level. Guys that young and that good don't get traded, like ever.
I think the proposal might be a bit high, but I don't think it's that outlandish Edmonton would ask for something like that.

from the time "the letter" came out, I never once believed we could actually stomach a rebuild, to me it was always a lot of talk anyway
Jim Dolan certainly couldn't, something crazy will happen this summer, I wouldn't count out anything

I don't want to be on the side of defending Dolan, but let's go back in time of the letter and tell 2018 you all of the following things would happen:
-You'd sign the premier free agent on the market and he would earn every penny of his contract and then some.
-Your 1C turns into one of the better centers in the league, can certainly build around him
-Team pulls a Norris level defender out of seemingly thin air, only gives up a couple 2nds to get it done
- Ryan Strome would be one of the best scrap heap finds in recent memory
- Have a goalie that may not be as good as Hank, but look every bit the part of a reliable starter
-Draft 2 and 1 in back to back years despite long odds
2018 you would probably be asking questions on why the team still could not make the playoffs. There are growing pains involved in rebuilding, but I don't think anyone asking why the team hasn't done more is making some sort of unfair critique. So many lucky breaks have happened, at some point questions should be asked about why things are not going better.

The letter was a way to get people to understand the strip down and not go crazy over it. With NY's ability to spend to the cap, the "rebuild" was really just a way to turn over contracts that the team did not see as long term solutions and replace them with contracts we like to discuss like civilized human beings.

the question is though, which of the 4 teams that made the playoffs in this division should the Rangers have beaten out for the last playoff spot and didnt

Exuberant expectations. People are ignorant to the fact that teams just dont become contenders over night. Patience and growth are required.
