the question is though, which of the 4 teams that made the playoffs in this division should the Rangers have beaten out for the last playoff spot and didnt - jimbro83
I hear you. The problem is, when you are ready to take that next step, you find ways to beat those teams. When we were contending, we found ways to beat the Caps, Pens, etc. It may not be a shame to finish behind NYI, but at some point you have to finish ahead of them.
I'm not implying that we should have won the division, but the answer to that question to some extent is all of them.

I don’t actually think the Oilers will trade Draisaitl, but I think that’s what they need to become a better team. - nyrangers9479
An argument can be made that Draisaitl has the best contract in the league. I don't think the answer is to trade him away. Agree they need depth, but it's really the James Neal/Kassian/Russell contracts that are killing them. Not the reigning league MVP making $8.5M. It would also help if McDavid even played a sliver of defense. For all the talent he has he's been bad this series. |

Exuberant expectations. People are ignorant to the fact that teams just dont become contenders over night. Patience and growth are required. - Brukie
It depends on what you consider contenders on how I'd answer this. I think there are several levels between that, and just making the playoffs could have been a realistic goal.
Rebuilds do take time, but there are also several examples where franchises turned the corner very quickly. Tampa for example made the conference finals within a ouple years in 2011 after drafting Hedman and Stamkos. Although 06-07 was probably a little bit of a fluke for them, the Flyers literally went to back to back ECF in the two following years after picking 2nd.
The closest examples you probably could find of a modern team taking years before really jelling, are Carolina and Columbus.

NYR Twitter actually has more people trading for McDavid than Draisatl right now |
|
|
|
If Pittsburgh loses in the first round to the Isles and Mike Sullivan gets fired there I would definitely be interested in him |

He was but that was a long time ago and he was the assistant back then. He's done pretty well in Pittsburgh. I'd probably put him in my top 3 if he were available. Gallant being 1 and Sully/Tocchet being 2/3 in no particular order |

you guys with your Draisatl trades, don't you think there would be a 100% chance they'd insist on Shesterkin in the package? |

from the time "the letter" came out, I never once believed we could actually stomach a rebuild, to me it was always a lot of talk anyway
Jim Dolan certainly couldn't, something crazy will happen this summer, I wouldn't count out anything - jimbro83

We get the trifecta this year as fans
A new coach hiring
A pretty big free agent signing
A big trade
I have a feeling all 3 are happening this summer |

I'd take Jeff Carter as a 3rd line center right now. He's a bit older but perfectly fine for a year. |

listening to JD
basically he said that this Covid season was absolutely nuts, and a lot of players need a normal season with a normal training camp desperately
additionally, he said patience is needed with young players
and I get the feeling when he said those things to Dolan, Dolan wanted to hear none of it |

Kadri is an idiot. How do you get suspended in the first round of the playoffs 3 times? (frank)ing moron. |
