I get it. It’s a really hard train of thought to possess when you’re constantly in the playoffs with guys who’s sweaters are gonna be hung in the rafters a week after they retire. You’re emotionally invested in these types of players. They may never see a talent the likes of Sid ever again. And, to have a Malkin next to him for over a decade? That’s nuts.
But, as you alluded to in that ‘88 series…I think they’re done. Three straight first round losses for a franchise like them should be a gigantic red flag especially when your 3 best players are on the wrong side of 35.
Plus, throw in the fact they have a new GM, a GM that didn’t construct most of the roster, and the fact there’s an expansion draft, this is a time for them to rebuild and possibly not have to go through what the Rangers or Devils had/still having to go through. There’s no way Crosby is going anywhere, he shouldn’t, but if I’m Hextall I’m definitely listening to offers on the other 2 and I’m using Guentzel and his relatively decent contract to get a goalie. - potvin05
I wouldn’t get rid of Guentzel and I doubt they do. He had a rough going this series and I think we can give our team some credit for that more then it being a reflection of the player that he is. Even after his subpar series he has 48 points in 51 playoff games.
Unless they’re going full rebuild which there’s a zero % chance of it happening he isn’t getting traded. |

Yeah he was something else. There was some collection of jackasses on there for a stretch. Changed a lot they’re all pretty cool imo. - Cptmjl
That's only because Crosby & Malkin aren't in their prime anymore. It's amazing what that does to a fanbase |

They absolutely need a goalie. Guentzel’s contract is decent and he’s probably their most attractive asset they have right now. I’m not saying they HAVE to trade him but other team’s are certainly gonna ask for him.

The Pens are gonna suck for a decade starting in a year or two and I can't wait

They’ve had a good run for sure but if losing in the 1st round 3 years in a row with an aging nucleus and no number one goalie isn’t a clear sign they have to do something then I don’t know what to tell their fanbase. |

Of course. Don’t forget we went through the first round with Leo on the first line and Bailey Sucks on the roster. - nyisles7
Regular season Bailey sucks.
Playoff Bailey is a perennial Conn Smythe favourite. |

Pens have some real tough decisions to make for sure. I would investigate moving Malkin and maybe even Letang. It's tough when the team grows old together like what happened to the Isles after the Cup run. |

The Pens are due to struggle for a while. I was nervous with this series with the way Jary played against the Isles this season. It's incredible how Bailey, Nelson, and even Eberle pick it up during the playoffs. - ses111
Having a brick wall for a goalie also helps
