Last year was a success that stood alone on its own merits.
This season was a mild disaster.
Comparing 2 teams visions is apples & oranges. Different circumstances. I put it at the feet of ownership for each teams progress. FA fails & still hasn’t dealt with it properly. No expectation on my part til I see that changed significantly. - Nighthawk
Looking at the whole, last season was an anomaly for the Canucks. They probably shot too high then, too low this season.
Of course both teams had different circumstances. Different rosters, picks, etc etc. But the idea is that one team made a plan and stuck to it (and had the owners on their side), and another team tried to do multiple things at the same time and switch plans back and forth a waver from vision to vision (and has a meddling owner). |

So the Canucks are a success because of last year?
I'm not saying TO has done great as a franchise the last 7 years (successful), but their trajectory and sustained winning is much more positive than the Canucks' right now. And since their "Shanaplan" started at the same time as Benning, I find it fitting that one team was more able to enact a better vision/rebuild than the one we're currently mired in - NewYorkNuck
We didn't start rebuilding until Benning's re-tool fell apart. |

A good synopsis 👍
Challenge is to remove the fat & get out from under other problems holding the team back.
Expectations should be a bounce back year. That can only happen & be sustainable if all hands are in deck off & on the ice. The dysfunctional problems are not on the ice but the results are. |

Bold take, Tampa is pretty stacked - Nucker101
I had
Bos 6
Panthers 7
Hurricanes 4
Pit 6. Scratched out Isles in 6.
Col 6
VGK 7
Tor 5
Edm 7 scratched out Wpg in 5.
I'm too weak to go against the norm often.
A guy who used to be on this website and I go against each other. 1 point for winning team, .5 for picking right amount of games of winning team.
Last year I won by .5 |

I know that some don't believe looking into the past GM has nothing to do with the current GM but Burke's first year in 98-99 had
Naslund 25 yrs old
Moginley 29
Ohlund 21
Aucoin 25
McCabe 22
Bertuzzi 23
Jovo 22
Schaefer 21
There were pieces there for him to start with and he made a lot of good moves to aid them with acquiring the Sedin's, Morrison and bringing Back Linden, Some others have grown like Sopel, Cooke.
He was a very good GM. He had more pieces to work with.
Benning started with 33 year olds Sedins, Hamhuis 31, Bieska 33, Higgins 31, Burrows 33
Bonino 26
Horvat 19
Tanev 24
Kassian 23
Then some mid aged players he added that had never panned out.
Benning has made mistakes but he didn't start out with what very much comparable to other Canuck GM's and where the players were in their careers.
In two years time, the next GM will get the same start that Burke did. - manvanfan
See, it’s this that pisses me off. After 10 seasons with JB we are in the same position as we were during Burke’s first season. Are you kidding me? That’s just not good enough.
Regardless of the talent Burke inherited, that was a team that had previously missed the playoffs four consecutive seasons. They sucked! but Burke was a gun slinger then and his moves hit more than they missed. With each move the team improved. His foundational work would eventually become a favoured Cup contender.
But what impressed me the most about Burke was his demeanour. He was in charge. Nobody questioned it. For me, that shows leadership. And strong leadership gives me confidence in my team.
Jim provides none of that. That’s why I think a President is desperately needed. |

It's cheaper to have Benning fix his mistakes than to hire someone else to fix them. That's the only reason to make this decision. |

Imo ownership directed it to be a retool. They hired the people that said they’d wing it. That’s all on FA.
The rebuild ensued & TL
fired & followed by mostly misses with fewer hits. Chaos
Someone mentioned vision & that is up to the hockey minds if FA hires the man to have one. The GM doesn’t run the entirety of the team. He only suffers. |

That's a miscalculated assumption that Benning can fix his mistakes this last in the game with the same mindset and arrogance that got him into them in the first place. |

He can't fix it only time can fix it, that's why he said he needs 2 more years (until those sh itty contracts expire) |

This is what I find frustrating. Then the stupid, "Not all growth is linear" logic. OK, show me the growth. It's hard to see in the midst of being one of the worst franchises in the league during the past 5 years. |

What was Toronto's plan? Sign Marleau to trade him away and cost them a 1st round pick. Benning would be absolutely raped through the coals if that was the case.
You wouldn't have to chant Fire Benning, FA would have done it his self. |

As our captain that’s on pace with both Naslund and Sedin. He’s held up his part of the deal as a much younger captain. |

That's not really the fault of Benning, What you start with pretty much depends on the previous guys. Who were hired by FA.
Benning isn't really the take charge kind of guy. Find a Pres who is a leader and does the speaking. Let Benning worry about other "stuff" |
