I would take a shot at Nesterov over bringing Staal back. |

Merrill is taking a beating in the Montreal blogs. Staal is a $1M x1yr...maybe, Hjalmarsson if available 2 x $2.5M tops, But Ryan Murray would be better, but I think he would go with a 5 x $4M deal and I think if we are looking for stop gaps, or place holders in FA. If trading for someone, why not Lindholm from the Ducks? Is he going to recover? It seems the Ducks have too many defenders to protect in the ex draft. Maybe a deal can be made there. Are there other teams that need to trade a LD before the draft???? |

Detroit has a couple of empty expansion draft spots on D. There are teams who will lose a good defensemen for nothing and may instead turn to Detroit and at least get something in return. So shouldn't be too hard to add talent via trade. A guy like Vince Dunn is an obvious example.
Also don't know why the focus is on guys under 30. Adding a veteran on a short deal helps you shelter kids for most of the year and can then be sold at the deadline as a rental. |

Fair enough. I do like Dunn. I basically just set a parameter looking at possible multi year candidates. Staal was a good fit, for sure. I think you’re right about teams making deals to avoid loss without compensation. Could be an exciting off season, lots of movement |

I do think you (and Kooleus) are on to something. The trade market may give a lot higher value. That, in turn, could drop UFA prices too. As my mom said in the 90s, double coupons!!! Make those GMs pay you to take their soup. (Mom owned Meijer on double coupons) |

You’ve definitely been the Schmidt advocate. There’s a few guys that wouldn’t mind seeing him here, but you definitely get the wave if that happens |

It’s kind of funny to be in this place. For years we had a shortage on right shot defensemen. Just feels a bit ironic, but with the flat cap and expansion draft, it’s still a buyer’s market |

Maybe Skjei from Carolina. Or Toews/Graves from Colorado. |

If we could get Toews from Colorado that would be a grand slam. Unfortunately I think their front office is smart enough to not let that happen. One of the most underrated D in the entire league IMO, with three years left on a fairly team-friendly deal.
EDIT: Forgot about the expansion draft troubles for Colorado due to Erik Johnson's NMC. If they can't get Johnson to waive it, Toews might be in play. Still, you'd think there'd be a lot of competition for him given his age, ability, and contract. |

2 of Skjei, Schmidt, Dunn, and Graves/Toews. And Nesterov for depth.
Will be interesting to see the prices for trades. |

Sorry for jumping ahead but if Florida loses I would like to grab Defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok lefty (700k two more yrs) I’m staying with the youth movement. He has some sharp instincts. |

Don’t see why Florida would be inclined to move him. |

Damn, ya'll are REALLY looking into the potential gets with some in-depth analysis!!! I'm loving reading the proposed moves, some REALLY good insights.
Now, you guys know I'm not as savvy as I could/should be, BUT:
I like Nestorov & Merrill. Getting Skjie (sp????, I'm dumb) but that may take some major tooth pulling as CAR isn't in Cap-Purgatory, but that kid's pretty good. I'm thinking stop-gaps like Nesty, but our cupboards are kinda bare for LD. And yes, Jeremy, there's TONS of irony there in that we've been slammed w/LD, now it's RD!!!!
Not sure what the LD market looks like in the draft over the next 2 years, but knowing Bettman's balls we'll not be in a place to take a #1 LD over the next 2 years, so trading & UFA may be the only way to fill the void. Thus, Merrill....he was absolutely solid this year for us, and he's getting his butt kicked in the Montreal media so should be easier to pry away from Les Habitants. STAY AWAY from Chara....no reason to get him because what we get is going to need to be in place for a few years. |

Interesting post on PHR yesterday:
While many expect Red Wings top prospects Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond to make the jump to the NHL next season, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman told MLive’s Ansar Khan that the youngsters aren’t pencilled into a spot on the roster. While he acknowledged that Seider – recently named the SHL’s defenseman of the year – should be ready to jump into the NHL lineup, Detroit has preferred a slower development approach in recent years which could result in the youngsters getting some AHL time first.
Leads me to believe that some stop-gaps are in the works..... |

Honestly I think Seider starting in the NHL and Raymond in the AHL was always going to be the most likely outcome.
Raymond had a good year for 19-year-old but was not an elite SHLer overall by any stretch. Depending on how his development goes he may be in the NHL at some point next year, and may even stay on, but IMO he's almost certainly going to need adjustment time in the minors first.
Seider, on the other hand, is 20 years old and was probably the best defender in the SHL last season, a league that's already on par (I would argue slightly better even) than the AHL. Not saying he won't have some early growing pains against NHL competition but it's a good bet he's already easily one of Detroit's six best defenders. |

Pettersson jumped into the NHL in DY+2
Nylander jumped into the NHL halfway through DY+2
Hoglander jumped into the NHL in DY+3
Pettersson had elite DY+1 production
Raymond had better DY+1 production than Hoglander but not near close enough to Nylander. I’d expect mostly a full AHL season for Raymond. |

Even if Johnson waives his NMC...they have Makar, Girard, Toews and Graves. So it's likely that Colorado opts for an 8-1 scheme. They protect these 4 guys, maybe 5 if Johnson refuses to waive. Then MacKinnon and Rantanen and Kadri. Landeskog is UFA. So they expose Burakovsky, Donskoi, Nichuskin. I'd rather lose a middle 6 forward and preserve the great group of d-men. So I doubt Colorado trades a d-man for cheap. |

Yeah the Johnson NMC is key. If he waives there’s no deal to be made but if he doesn’t there could be something there. |
