Yeah I definitely remember this post and I also think maybe Rino posted Carter as an option earlier in the season when we were looking at buy low candidates.
- j.boyd919

We were talking about Carter very early on, before Brown was being mentioned, and then there was no mention of him again until our local insider Pens4life mentioned it close to the deadline...thats my recollection of it

He checks a lot of boxes
- Thorny87

He also "checks" out the plexi glass.(last nights hit) I dont remeber the exact names I was given but I remember saying it seems like a lot but Id do the trade. Off memory I think it was something like Pettersson, Legare, Clang and a mid round pick

I feel like you would usually be the guy saying don't trade for the career 12% shooter who had a 27.5% this year.
- Tojo.

In a vacuum it’s not the greatest trade but something has to be done about the lack of scoring. Don’t get me wrong I think a Hintz/Bishop play would have a lot higher reward.

Only replying to this cuz of 2 people this year getting there panties in a knot (wont name names haha) when I posted what Ive heard from my buddy and as some have messaged me saying thanks for the info even though some people are mad about it.... But 3 days before the Carter trade happened I posted

"From what Ive heard Brown isnt there target there at all. Foligno is there choice for that role but sounds like the price is like 3-4 average pieces. They like Iafallo but sounds like he is going to be re signing with the Kings. Jeff Carter is apparently who they want. Not sure I love it but he can still skate and shoot so who knows maybe he turns it around. Havent heard anything other then Foligno and the 2 kings though"

It still amazes me that between MAF and Murray... we netted zero assets.

Isn’t that rule number 1 of the GMJR handbook?

Plan 1:
Move Malkin to wing. From a defensive responsibilities perspective, this would do him some good. Of the team's 4 centers, he was a distant 4th in faceoffs. I think moving him to Crosby's wing on a permanent basis is an interesting idea that would not have made sense until recently.

Primary targets: 2nd line center, 1 bigger RWer with a scoring touch.

Forwards:
Malkin-Crosby-Target FA/Trade
Jake-Target FA/Trade-Kapanen
McCann-Carter-Target Poulin (not sure if either him or McCann can play RW)
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

Guys moved/Released: Zucker/Rust/Gudreau/Rodrigues

Plan 2: Keep Malkin and Crosby seperated. Keep the status quo and keep your strength at center with Crosby-Malkin-Carter

Primary targets: 1 RWer (Line 1), 1 LWer (Line 2)

Jake-Crosby-Target
Target-Malkin-Kapanen
McCann-Carter-Poulin
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

The other question is, can a guy like Poulin make McCann expandable?

In terms of targets, Zack Hyman, Brandon Saad, Blake Coleman, Bobby Ryan for FAs... some decent trade targets could be out there as well.

- SuperHenderson13

I don't think Malkin needs to move to wing yet though that tine is coming. But maybe it is time to try playing him and Sid together on a loaded top line. Not my first choice because I think you can build 2 scoring lines easier with Malkin at 2C, but not outrageous. Need to give that top line a different look.

I think I actually play McCann with Malkin and give him some of the center defensive responsibilities. Geno's lines have had issues at times defending and that is a strength for McCann. And while he doesn't create much offense, he's a threat to at least finish off plays.

McCann can't play RW, they actually bumped Jake to fit him with Sid. Poulin we think can but nobody is sure.

Nice suggestion of Coleman.

It's going to be a wild summer of speculation. I know we'll start hearing the Malkin/Letang rumors like crazy.

If they plan on moving on from Sullivan I think that will be the first move because my guess is they will want to bring in a coach who's not afraid to implement a heavier style of play.

I know Tojo, I know...but I saw people trying to disrupt Sorokin around the net as well...could there of been more, absolutely, but we weren't totally void of it. Sometimes goalies get an inexplicable aura around them and sh!t will just not go past them. Look at the Freddy tip headed 5 hole in OT in game 5...just crazy that was saved...Sorokin barely moved...or the very tip of the toe save outside the top of the blue paint getting a tiny piece of the Crosby tip.
- MattStrat

I feel like I'm not seeing a lot of it. Zucker for sure. Jake tries but usually gets knocked down quickly. Lots of guys trying to tip but not really screening. I agree they aren't playing a perimeter game.

Maybe just the result looks a lot more like Jake that when they try in the tough areas, they lose. Certainly not winning a lot of battles for loose pucks around either goal.

Something along these lines. Try my damndest to aquire a top tier goalie. Try to pluck Saad and Hyman from FA. Make room for POJ.

Pens issue wasn't their roster in the playoffs, it was their goaltending.

- j.boyd919

I am on board with a bunch of the moves here but in reality the cap situation isn't working (Hyman is getting at least double that $2M) and outside of goaltending, this isn't a better roster than what they currently have.

Really like Saad but he is basically the same player as Zucker. If you dont have Hyman, and you have to fill that spot on the 3rd line with someone around $2.5M.

So you are neutral on the top 6, downgrading the bottom 6, neutral on D and a big upgrade in net. Does it make them a contender? Not sure.

I agree here. I feel a lot forget quickly but compared to when we had Hornqvist there was very few goalie interference reviews or close calls this year for the pens compared to last year. Zucker stands out as doing it the most now for sure and I dont even really think thats "his game". Its more of a fly by the net or tip on the way by sort of "going to the net" rather then standing there and making the goalie move to look around you.

We all seen how many times Pelech tossed Jake around quite easily but if that was Foligno my bets would be that wouldnt be happening and he would be parked in front of Sorokin or down low while Jake and Sid do there thing.

They had him, but they misspelled him name "Hornqvist" instead of "Foligno."

I'd love the Pens to just get meaner. I swear Dumo apologizes before he hits someone.

The Pens let little guys like Eberle dictate where the play is heading in our zone. They don't get discouraged because they never really have to pay the price. Make em hurt.

I'm not sure if it comes from Sully or not but if you're not faster than the other guy you can't let him skate by while you wave your stick.

Is tocchet a good coach? Madden & yohe mentioned him, IF they would let sully go. Said about his style of toughness & skill, and him having a relationship w/ Mario, hextall, and some the players, obviously. I don’t know much about how things went in Arizona the past few years, but feel like I recall him making some decisions I definitely didn’t agree w/, earlier in his tenure there.

From what I remember a lot of the Pens were sad to see Tocchet go. He was very well-liked. The issue for me is comfort and familiarity. I'd much rather have a coach with a fresh take who will not kind of slide back into old routines and we wind up with the same product.

Doesn't Tocchet and Kessel come as a package deal?
