Additionally their GSAAs netted to 0. So this best goalie duo in the league was exactly average in terms of 5v5 GSAA in March. - Feds91Stammer
It's funny, the local media was talking up the goalies and the National media was saying the Pens were playing good defense during that stretch. (And of course a lot of bad teams.) |

Lee looked good. I wish maniac played a filles season in the A instead of riding the taxi squad most of it. - 10inchTerror
Agree and same thing with O'Connor. That taxi squad was necessary, but a lot of young players would have benefited more staying in the AHL. |

Marino needs to bulk up more than Guentzel. Jake is fine.
Marino seems to have plateaued. The sophomore slump may have contributed to his leveling off. I want to hear he puts in a good off season work out, gain some weight and strength. Then see where he's at next season.
It's between Marino and Oliver who is going to lead the defense of our future. Marino's time is now. |

You like to hear that from Jake but honestly how much muscle can he put on that frame and not lose a step? He's not exactly fast now. - Thorny87
He could put on a good lean 5 lbs in 4 months. And for the record, if you are training appropriately, (for hockey I like combining heavy eccentrics with dynamic work) that 5 pounds will make you faster, not vice versa. Start with heavy, higher volume stuff early in the offseason and move to almost pure dynamic as you get closer to training camp to start prepping for conditioning.
The side benefit is improvements to durability. Shoulders & knees specifically, training properly will help greatly with stability and the ability to absorb contact.

Jake’s attitude was upsetting. The Islanders are not dirty. Jake got hit clean and simply out muscled around the net. Instead of attempting to battle through it he would lay on the ice and look at the refs. Or female dog at the refs or go pout on the bench. That’s the culture Sully built though. |

You literally can NOT put ALL the blame on Tristan Jarry. Where was the defense? How many turnovers did they commit that led to the Islander chances? Letang was the only D-man that was "positive", which isn't saying much when compared to what was out there. They are a good team, but the D needs some work. Yes Jarry made mistakes (all goalies do at some point). How about we talk about the 1st line who had a total of 4 GOALS in this series after scoring 69 in the regular season. They went cold at the worst time. How about Sid making mistakes and not being able to defend against the rush to help the D? This was the first time I think Sid actually looks like he's lost a step.
All this said, there is no reason to break up the core. A few changes on the D fron and maybe a new goalie to compete with Jarry (because don't pretend that DeSmith would have been great either). |

jake is not fine, he is 165lbs soaking wet. my 13 yr old is bigger than him on skates and more physical. He has a teanager body but does think the game the same as Crosby. I just wish he had a much bigger frame... |

That doesn't sound like "just play" to me.. In all seriousness though I complained about some players staying on the ice too long when they're not hurt as well. |

I just think Kapanen is a real awkward interview. Maybe part of why the Toronto media didn't like him same as Phil. - Tojo.
Hahaha I posted that as a joke... I don't think anyone is actually lying... Also, if I remember correctly the Toronto media were very harsh towards and regarding Phil for the most part, especially towards the end of him being there. Perhaps it was one or two guys in the TO media. |

There's rightfully been a lot of talk about what Burke and Hextall will do in the offseason. For those of you who have or have read Burke's autobiography ("Burke's Law"), on pages 48-50 he spells out what he wants his teams to be. I suspect that is going to be the model for the Penguins. He's got a couple of charts for what he expects for and from each player on the four offensive lines, the three defensive pairings, and the two goalies - as well as the 13th forward.
I'm having a hard time seeing Sully being able to or wanting to coach that collection of player types. |

Zachary Justin Parise, 37 years of age come July of this year, scoring/producing a massive timely tying goal in a game 7....Sid and/or Geno could never do that again in the playoffs...too old... |

Yeah... Simmonds... Soon as I read the name it all came back to me. He's a knob. I used to watch a show called The Reporters... Basically a panel of sports journalists discussing sports and mostly hockey. He was on that pretty much every episode.
That is a pretty gross cover story photo. I believe the Toronto Sun to be a top 5 to 10 bought/viewed paper in Canada... and thats the cover/main page story. The media up here is pretty nuts about hockey |

Plus Samsonov was not the legitimate starter going in the playoffs. Unlucky that Vanachek got hurt. So I equate that to DeSmith making a blunder like that in relief of Jarry. - chimpira
Eh. VV was only the starter because of issues Samsonov had, with covid protocol and team suspensions. But really, they both (frank)ing sucked this year. |

Where was the defense you ask, they were pinching. That's not their fault, that's what Sullivan wants.
Turnovers? That's a little different. Not all odd man rushes were the result of turnovers. Quite a few one on ones and two on twos had forwards pretending to be defensemen. Why? Because our D was pinching and lost the race to the puck. Again not their fault.
Another thing I noticed, the Pens would be cycling down low and I'm wondering why nobody is in front of the net. I then notice it's a defenseman down low, now he's trying to get back to his position while the forward is covering for him.
Thereby negating any scoring chance.
All this makes for entertaining hockey. The down side is exactly what happened and what has been happening for three straight years.

I don't know. Jake is listed at 5'11 180, which is bigger than I thought. You have to wonder how much muscle he can put on and maintain, and maintaining it can almost be harder. Adding weight can slow you down, but I think he'd have to put on significantly more weight to make that happen.
Doing it naturally, at the high end he could put on 8 to 10 pounds of PURE muscle given all the resources he has at his disposal, and I mean not muscle and fat, over three or four months. Realistically, if he puts in a good amount of work I'd expect 4 to 6 pounds, which I don't think would have a significant affect on his speed.
If I were him I'd worry less about upper body and try to get stronger on his lower body. He'll get more power that way and be harder to knock off the puck. - Rinosaur
I was listed at 5' 9" 165 in high school. I didn't make 165 until I joined the service. I still haven't reached 5' 9" and about to give up hope. Height and weight are always inflated.
Guentzel is at the age where he just isn't going to put on a lot of muscle. When I was young and working out I read you really can only expect to put on two pounds of muscle a year. That is, of course, after you have reached your peak physical condition and your growing years are behind you. At 27, Jake's done maturing, physically.

Question, why are people saying Jarry can't be on the team next year and goes as far as saying they should give Seattle draft picks or players to take him?
Why would the Pens do that?
Jarry was awful but I don't believe he is a cancer in the locker room, where he has to leave ASAP! Why compound the problem?
I know it is fresh so people are po'd right now but is there absolutely no chance he can ever redeem himself?
