I just pulled Chris Pronger's numbers from his cup run with Philly and they are not flattering. I'd say not even above average good.

It's a shame the Flyers had to carry him to the finals, they probably would have won without him.

that would be an interesting exercise to apply today’s advanced stats/analytics to yesterday’s stars. I wonder if, like your Pronger research, most of the old guard wouldn’t look so hot.

Chris Kreider is #1 in the NHL in expected goals differential, John Tavares is bottom 5.

I guess it's a no brainer who's the better player!!! Yay analytics!

It's insane how much people put into analytics. I'd say that's because they can't tell talent when they see it.

It's better than the people think that their eye test is correct.

They only have data for the last 5 years of Pronger's career but it's really not great. It would be hilarious if he had bad data in Edmonton, too bad they don't have any.

No it isn't.

Analytics would have picked Nick Bonino to the all-star game last year so (frank) off.

Definitely changed my opinion a bit after the article. Would still love him on the team, just wouldn’t trade for him. Think he’ll end up getting overpaid.

They have the assets to trade for him. Plus cap space.

Sean Walker or Matt Roy both signed for a few years, both 26 both RHD can go back the other way. Plus a centre and a pick or two.

Probably a deal close to what Wsh paid for Mantha?

I was just browsing through Jay Beagle's analytics and it suggests he's had one of his better seasons in recent memory.

Stanley Cup champs typically have great analytics as a TEAM. That's because it's a TEAM sport and the analytics don't account for all of the variables such as what's being asked of a player.

We hear bashing all the time about +/- because a player may have stepped on or off the ice as a goal is being scored. Yes, it happens but it's hardly a common occurrence over a career as it probably evens out a fair bit.

Statistical analysis is more suited for baseball than any other sport. WHIP is probably the best stat there is because it isolates the pitcher. Even then, whoever is catching or calling the game can greatly influence it. Even then, strikeouts matter because it means you can take care of a batter on your own. Then there are others like ERA.

Hitting stats are subjective to whoever else is in the batting order. OBP is probably the best stat to measure performance but of course slugging % tells another part of the story.

These are stats used to highlight a player in a 1vs1 situation....not within a team structure or system where they become even more muddied.

That's why the eye test is paramount.

Good grief, hey let’s complain to just complain, this is actually pathetic.

Complain about no media clips, where is JB, hiding from the media.

Benning makes available himself to media, oh oh JB hiding behind his daughter.

Team signs coach, working on signing others, inks Podkolzin to contract, oh, oh club is pathetic for announcing Anything positive.

Reubenkincade is spot fucking on, this fan base gets what it deserves, (frank)ing pathetic and middle school antics.

You really only need 5 minutes of highlights to be adequately certain to proclaim superiority in determining player abilities and talent. That plus read all analytical articles, watching repeated full games against all types competition really means diddly squat.

You must be of the older generation if you need to watch games...🤷‍♂️

I value analytics but Seth Jones is a legit #1 dman lol. Reminds me of Suter, the analytics never loved Suter but just by watching him play, you could tell he was a legit #1 dman.

Also to be fair, analytics liked him a lot more prior to his last 2 seasons so it’s possible that he just joins a long list of players who doesn’t enjoy playing for Torts. Either that, or really had somehow declined while still in his 20’s, which I don’t buy into.

The fans who post online everyday about the Canucks don’t represent the majority of the fanbase.

Did you watch how the Habs smothered Matthews last night and gave him no space? So much so that when he actually did have a bit of time you could tell he felt rushed to get a shot off.

The entire defensive strategy seemed to be to give the guy no time or space to do anything. I wonder which analytics would show that? Yeah, sample size blah blah but there's clearly 1 guy targeted.

Hockey isn’t baseball. There are far too many variables. Stats are “interesting” but that’s it. Perhaps in 10 years they will be more
Reliable in hockey. +\- is more reliable than corsi and we all know how worthless that stat is

I mean if they’re truly doing a job it should be reflected in how many shots Matthews is getting from the slot/crease and one timers compared to usual amount. If that’s not the case then it’s probably Price who deserves a lot of credit.

I haven’t looked but I assume it’s a combination of both strategy and Price
