Man Sorokin really held down the Fort early allowing the Isles to counter attack.

At some point the greatest roster ever assembled in the cap era has to get some luck...

So like 55 Million spent on 7 guys, kind of kills the depth and ability to roll lines.

Leafs outplayed Columbus but lost because of bad luck, hot goalie, this was like once in a million. No changes needed. Best roster ever.

Fast forward a year...Leafs outplayed Montreal in every game. But lost because of bad luck, hot goalie, injuries, did I mention bad luck. Anyone who says this roster is flawed is probably just old and not as smart as me. If they replay this series 100 times the Leafs would win like 99 times.

So how have teams done who pay 2 or 3 guys 10-12 million?
Teams with success, have a more balanced payroll.

Leafs outplayed Columbus

are you Franking HIGH???????????

They got outscored 12-3 5v5 in that series.

It only went 5 because of a flukey comeback.

No team has won a cup during the cap era with a player earing over $10m.

Genuinely feel for Maple Leaf fans.
Think about it. An entire generation of kids that have not enjoyed a playoff series victory.
As a franchise, It isn’t from lack of trying. The fan support is over-the-top.

Hopefully they will break the spell next season, with no chance of a Covid asterisk.

Also, Go Blues!!!

Not to be obnoxiously pedantic, but Kuch made $12 million last year and Ovi made $10m the year they won. Crosby was over $10 for both of his more recent Cups.

Cap hit, though, yeah it doesn’t seem like anyone was over 10, at least not the last few years. Several around 9.5 though, and that’s not necessarily a bad idea. Penguins had a lot tied up in Crosby and Malkin, the Lightning had a lot tied up in Kuch and Stamkos (and Stamkos barely even played).

Those teams were just better constructed, though. They had deep lineups and excellent goaltending. Their players consistently showed up when it mattered. Leafs have not had that luck/luxury so far.

Yes the Leafs badly outplayed Columbus. But were stopped by insane goaltending. Look at the shots, Corsi, Jfresh cards, xGTFO%. Just bad luck. And now it happened again with Price. Its literally like being struck by lightning twice. I mean, the Leafs have way more ELITE players than Montreal. The only team that comes close is like an all-star game roster.

Meanwhile, Montreal's largest law firm closed at 12pm today so employees could prepare for the game 7 hours later. Let that sink in...

no team has won a playoff series*

of course, it's an arbitrary cutoff with Ovi and Malkin at ~9.5, etc
