but you also need to think of the cap as Hamilton will ask for Pietrangelo $$$ and will get it if not close to it

16 million dollars out with Marner and Rielly out. That's a bit of cap.

I can't lay much blame on Dubas here.
Players first, then coaching staff, then perhaps Dubas, for the Foligno/Thornton/Simmonds moves/signings.
Some better players there would've made a difference and possibly a star would've emerged, but that low-hanging "vet presence" fruit is hard to pass up.
Every GM does it at some point in their career.
Toronto is a unique place to play, the toughest market in the league with the Habs a close second for slightly different reasons. - gravyface
I think Dubas did a good job overall. Adding Brodie and Bogosian really helped the Leafs defense. Goaltending was better with Campbell too.
Results are not what people expected, and some guys didn't pan out (Foligno, Thornton, Simmonds)... but I'm not convinced replacing Dubas by someone else would help the team in the long run. He's a good GM.

How do you blame Dubas for the Foligno/Thornton/Simmonds moves? Everyone was so excited when those were done.
I blame the players, and the players only for this loss.

Yes, somebody from the core needs to go and Marner is the guy. You can’t trade the best player the Leafs have - Canada Cup
All I care is that we get fair value.
If Matthews goes - fine. But a kings ransom has to come back.
Marner is my choice to go as well. Which (frank)ing sucks because he was my favourite Leaf before the contract negotiations.
If we have to wait until the season starts like Colorado did with Duchene - fine. But don't just trade these guys for nothing.

I don't like to troll. But this is for Mike for his comment on the buzzcast yesterday. It gave me great pleasure to watch the leafs choke yesterday. I watch the podcast everyday and I am a Pateron. I was very close to ending my subscription yesterday. I already left the leafs convo. Don't make me leave hockeybuzz. |

Rielly was good in this series. He stays IMO. I was so so about him before but he and Brodie were miles ahead of everybody else. |

They signed him to be a bottom 6 player and provide a presence.
for 700K he did that.
I don't know what people want from their bottom of the lineup players but its time to lower expectations for them. |

The only thing of consequence you can hold Dubas accountable for is tying his ship to the core, and who can blame him. Hindsight is everything but the only repetitively recommended deviation to the core on here was to ship off Nylander, and I think we all know how that could work out.
What else did Dubas do you can blame him for. The wrong 1 off 4th liners at league minimum? Yeah sorry, that's not the difference between Cup or choke.
Starting with a new GM is a backwards move, what does that do. A new guy with a new vision, a reset button... Maybe it pays off in a few years, maybe it doesn't.
That being said, if he refuses to hit this core with a nuke... He doesn't leave much choice... |

I blame Dubas for caving to the mouth-breathers in the media and the fan base begging for more "grit" when the clear issue was that nobody on the team could (frank)ing score when the top guys no-showed.

With a flat cap, where are you dumping $16M without taking any significant cap back, and what return do you expect? |

This team needs a Masai Ujiri moment. Someone in management who can man up and admit that this team's core cannot win. The verdict is more than in on that. And then, go out and make the right moves. If they don't believe Dubas can do it, he should be gone. - fifty__missions
Interesting. Which one tho, Mathews or Marner? I dont know why and Im probably one of the only ones that think so, but Id consider letting go of Mathews. Ive never felt he really truly likes being here. I dont know also if JT coming and getting the C bothered him, maybe he felt entitled since going number 1. Dont get me wrong, love his talent. I just dont see the heart, and at the end of his 5 years, he is totally testing free agency, pull a JT and Arizona will be singing the "coming home" song.
As for Marner, he totally did this to himself. No way he deserved what he got, at least not now. No playoff success to justify. By eating up so much of the PIE the team relies on the budget signings. Only Spezza has worked out in that regards. Marner is his own worst enemy now, its all a big mind screw job for him. No way Lou would have signed Marner for that coin and he would have put Daddy in his place. |

Thornton was signed for $700k and a lot of people, myself included, thought it was a good move.. Thornton's a guy that was to brought in to provide leadership and experience and I think he did that.. Wasn't brought in to put 50 points. |

I want them to sit in the press box when they play like sh!t.
Apparently that wasn't an option with Thornton.
