That's the thing, there's a video going around that breaks the play down pretty good. Guy even breaks it down clip by clip, Scheifele only needed to stick his stick out maybe 2 1/2 feet and could have poked checked Evans as he brings the puck around the goal post. He was never gonna stop him by hitting him.

Seen it. The video ignores where the puck was behind the net and it ignores real time and focuses on the frame by frame. It doesn’t tell the whole story |

How does it ignore it, if Scheifele keeps skating through the faceoff circle he might even beat Evans to the post. It was something that didn't need to happen, Scheifele had a chance to poke check and didn't even try. Jets fans should be pissed cause he didn't even need to put himself in this situation. |

the video made no mention of the location of the puck when Evans picked it up - it looked like Evans may not get to the puck and MS was planning course. 0.05 seconds later it is wrapped to the net. A check was planned, Evans made a hard play to the net and paid a heavy price. 1 or 2 for the head contact -- i don't understand the charge call. Someone said you can't hit a player coming around the net anymore? |

That was dirty dirty by Scheifele, and I would’ve accepted an even longer suspension.
Going for that hit instead of the poke check resulted in him actually pulling his stick back from the puck when it would’ve been 50/50 if he actually tried going for the block with his stick instead. Who knows, maybe he dives for it, stops the wraparound, then takes off the net for the whistle because of his momentum.
You can actually see him make the decision to just go for the kill before he’s close. Scheifele woke up and chose violence, and he deserved to be suspended. That’s it.
Chickensh*t move. |

frustration, it's a lot more physical than the oilers series, keeping your composure will apply to both teams. I'd be furious if I was a Jets fan, can't lose your #1 center for stupid poop like that. |

I am hoping that Stasny slots in for Scheifele and no other forward line changes needed.

Yea, that would be ideal. But ???

Just wanted to say the league got this wrong.
If you wanna call a charge, fine. In no way is this hit suspendable.
All these analyst talking like “he didn’t make a play for the puck”. Sorry, but in hockey there are other ways of getting the puck off your opponent…like…playing the BODY.
Not to mention it’s his first suspension…feels like mtl pressure. Reminiscent of when Gryba hit Ellers on a clean hit..but because Ellers didn’t see it coming (and was bleeding from his face hitting the ice) Gryba got 2 games.
Anyways, hope you guys overcome this hurdle. - Trilla
Look, I'm a Jets fan, and a Scheifele one, too. And believe it or not, I am the biggest fan of hard, physical hockey . . . But can you (or anyone, for that matter) HONESTLY tell me that you watched that video replay and saw a player who was actually trying to separate an opponent from the puck? That you saw a hockey play and not something closer to a wanton act of violence?? What I saw (and feel was made more evident when you recall his increasing aggression all game long) was a man who "lost it" for a moment--didn't like the outcome of the game or how the opponent had stifled his efforts all night long--and exploded. Sure, it happens all the time in hockey and in a number of different sports. But the NHL, from players and all the way up to the highest executives, can not be serious about safety and allow for that kind of play. Plain and simple. |

I'm torn on this one.
Schiefele had every right to make a choice between playing the puck or the body, that's the game. But, it doesn't give him carte blanche. He stopped striding before the hash marks, so obviously was not trying to hit absolutely as hard as he could. Dangerous, heavy play, but I feel there was not intent to injure. Conversely, had he kept striding and reached out with his stick he probably could have prevented the goal. So, not sure how to rectify that fact.
Regardless, the DoPS is a complete joke. Apparently, the dart landed on 4 games. No consistency on or off the ice these days.
And I will add my voice to those calling for props for Ehlers!! I spotted it immediately. That is how a good human being plays the game! Good on him.
All this being said, a small part of me wants Montreal to take the series before the suspension is over, thereby souring the fanbase on Schiefele and facilitating his trade to NY this summer!!!! |

Jets win 5-2 tonight!
The Scheifele-Evans situation has definitely made this series much more lively. |

This will never happen! Chevy has too much loyalty to his players to trade them.

Evans didn’t even bother to look to see who is coming. So, although Sheif could have let up, Evans has his head down not even bothering to see who is there.
Evans presented himself in a vulnerable position and yes Scheif should have let up but Evans served himself up on a platter.
Clean hit, keep your head up kid. |

Oh, I know it's a pipedream. But, Dolan didn't fire his Pres, GM and coach to stand pat this summer. And so many rumours scare the crap out of me!! Want NOTHING to do with Eichel, or any unproven commodities.
MS is one of the few guys I would be ok giving up 3-4 good assets for. |

The puck was already in the net when he got hit. So keep your head up after the play?
Honest question for my felllow Jets fans. If it was Mark Scheifele going for the same wraparound and Shea Weber did the exact same thing as Scheifele did to Evans, would we all be telling Scheifele to “keep his head up”? |

Fair question. I'll leave that to you Jets fans.
But, I disagree about the timing. The hit came so closely behind the puck crossing the line, I have no issue with that. He had already made his mind up as to puck or body. You can't freeze time. It's not like this was Hunter on Turgeon (like someone was silly enough to bring up here). |

From the end-zone camera angle you actually do see Evans looking to his right for a moment before crossing the red line.
And it does not matter if the guy puts himself in a vulnerable position while trying to score a goal. The onus is on the player laying the hit.
And why do you think - without exception - ALL of the analysts agree it was not a clean hit? Winnipeg fans are right and all the analysts are wrong?

Oh (frank) off, was it a suspension worthy hit? Sure but no chance a first time offender should get 4 games! I don't even like Schiefele.. Lol - JetFuel
You (frank) off you big baby. Your crying about the league wanting the Jets out of the playoffs is what makes you sound like a Canuck or Leaf fan. Be mad about the suspension all you want, but you're a sniveling little female dog and a moron too. |

Keep in mind that Evans was the victim of the check (to the head and apparently a charge), and I don't want to minimize what he is going/went through.
The answer to your question is yes - I would. When you take the puck hard to the net you can expect someone to be there standing the ground and defending to the edges of the rules. ie. you pay the price to make that play - Evans didn't have to take that puck to the net and it was his choice to do so. If he kept his head up and took it to the net he still would have got clobbered but maybe doesn't take it on the chin. Do we still call it hockey if we don't defend the net anymore?

Maybe most analysts agree but not all, Winnipeg fans are also divided. Most agree that 4 games does not fit the situation, I think the majority felt it was not a clean hit and was worth a game or two.
and what are you getting at with Evans looking to his right for a moment? Do you mean to say he was aware that if he tried to score the goal he would take a heavy check? If so wasn't that his choice to take that risk? |
