Brady Tkachuk
Gabriel Landeskog (82 game conversion)
1st season: 22g 52p
2nd season: 21g 47p
3rd season: 26g 65p
Brady Tkachuk (82 game conversion)
1st season: 25g 52p
2nd season: 24g 51p
3rd season: 25g 53p
Matthew Tkachuk (82 game conversion)
1st season: 14g 52p
2nd season: 29g 59p
3rd season: 35g 78p
My take: Brady is very comparable with his brother in terms of style of play and potential impact in the future. HOWEVER, when Matt signed his contract is september 2019 (after holding out all summer) it was following a 34 goal season. Similarly, Brady is coming off a season where his numbers spread over 82 games would be 25g and 53p. A fair contract for both the Sens and Brady would be 6 years @7-7.25m. OR 2 years @5m |

I think the Sens should implement a per player salary cap similar to what Yzerman did with Tampa.
The bar is set at Chabot's contract. Everyone takes that or less with a view to making sure a Maple Leaf scenario does not happen with 3-4 players eating up the majority of the cap.
The message to the players is that the team must consistently win and to do so the team needs to mind the cap. The team will hit the cap ceiling and the max term for players will be there. Sell it for what it is. It will give the franchise the greatest possible window to be successful. Players that want $9M+ will be traded and they can go elsewhere. In a few years this will also attract some top quality veterans willing to be signed to minimum value contracts as the mandate and the culture have been set to win a Cup. |

Ottawa’s Logan Brown is going to spend some time this summer training with Auston Matthews.
As has been reported, Chris Phillips resigned from the Senators’ charity because he was upset by the firing of another employee. In addition, several sponsors were upset with owner Eugene Melnyk’s comments on Bob McCown’s podcast last May. At that time, Ottawa city council voted to approve a $2.9-million tax break for a new car dealership in the neighbourhood of Vanier, part of a bigger plan to “stimulate business investment” in the area.

I guess they better hope Point gets hurt or suspended soon, because I don't think Vasilevsky is going to hand them a free win like Fleury did.

Since so much of this draft discusses th Defencemen, I'm most curious where Beniers and Johnson go.
Beniers seems to be solidifying himself more consistently in the mock drafts I've seen but Johnsnon I've seen ranked from 2nd to 9th. |

Beniers will almost certainly wind up as a top-3 pick, depending on how bad Buffalo/Seattle want to pick D-men. He's a sure-fire natural two-way C, who's a very safe pick in terms of having both good potential upside and a very safe floor. That's where Johnson is different... his offensive creativity is high-end, but there are significant questions about his defensive game, overall decision-making, and his effective transition to the NHL (i.e. he's listed at C/W, but typically projected as a #2LW).
Even if Johnson were available at #10, I'd rather see the Senators pick Lysell (RW) or McTavish (C), because I think they provide a lot more depth of value, not to mention that LW is arguably their best position in terms of prospect strength. If he's still on the board at #10, I'd even give strong thought to picking Jesper Wallstedt (G), for whom you could make a very compelling case as the BPA. |

I remember one of our previous bloggers did something like this. He disappeared for a few weeks, then posted a blog saying he was leaving. |

I'd love a blog going over some of the more likely candidates at 10th overall.
I'll be curious where Raty winds up, considering how highly he was ranked last year. |

Hey guys, I got the 10th overall pick in Jan Levines Mock Draft. Stole it from Spatso.
Any ideas on what to do with the pick?

I really like Kent Johnson, but I doubt he'll be there, and other Sens fans are less sold on him.
EDIT: Annnnnd he's gone!
I am also not board with trading down. Crapshoot or not, just take the BPA |

I’m pursuing trade down options and potential centres to fill the “first line veteran centre” who aren’t dinosaurs.
I think Wallstedt will be available and possibly McT. If McT is gone I’m pulling the trigger on a trade I’m thinking.
The way the draft is going it could look something like this
1. Buffalo-Powers, 2. Seattle-Beniers, 3. Ducks-Johnson, 4. Devils-Hughes, 5. Columbus-Eklund, 6. Red Wings-Clarke, 7. San Jose-Guenther, 8. Kings-Edvinsson, 9. Nucks-McTavish
Which leaves Wallstedt, Lysell, Sillinger and Lucius as potential options. These guys are going with safe picks so I don’t expect the top-9 players to change, if only in the order they are taken, and with that comes a drop off in quality prospects I would reckon.
There is no point in taking Wallstedt although it would solve goalie issues permanently as soon as 3 years from now.
I just see more value in using it to trade out of the 2021 early picks (10th and one of 38th or 42nd) for early picks in 2022 with a hope that all developmental leagues are able to have a season for 2021/22, or, use the 10th and 38th,or 42nd, picks to attain an NHL ready centre that fits the bill of the “1st line veteran”.
Nonetheless, I am looking at options. |

I'd posted the idea of trading up with SJ using their 2nd as well, so I like that strategy. From there, I might have taken Brandt Clarke ahead of Dylan Guenther, but either would be very welcome additions to the prospect pool.

Specifically, he'll be the Senior VP in charge of Player Development...
https://www.sportsnet.ca/...ident-player-development/
Normally I find Pierre McGuire a bit much in terms of rehearsed enthusiasm, but I know he's still pretty well regarded as a smart hockey guy. Player development is probably the right focus too, as it's basically the entire crux of the rebuild. Hopefully there's some good draft input as well, as I'd really like to see them fill in some gaps in the prospect depth this year. Four picks in the top-75 is just as good an opportunity as they had in either 2018 or 2019 to add multiple pieces, and I'm going to be frustrated if they don't invest at least a couple of those picks at C, RW, or RD. |
|
|
|
Interesting to hear McGuire's take on the 7-player foundational structure, and that he feels the Senators are 3 players away from really contending (i.e. that they don't have 3 of these roles currently filled, though a guy like Sanderson can effectively be penciled in).
https://www.sportsnet.ca/...-players-away-contending/
Based on his described structure, the team should ideally have:
Top-2C - Norris
Top-2C - (unclear)
Power W - Tkachuk
Scoring W - Stutzle
Offensive D - Chabot
Shutdown D - Sanderson
Quality G - (unclear)
If he's really serious about this structure, it could bring someone like Wallstedt back into serious consideration at #10 (if he's still on the board), as it would clearly knock off one of these seven distinct positional needs. We also know that Melnyk went out of his way to bring up Askarov last year as a potential pick at #5... not to mention that it's clear that Murray isn't the solution in goal, and among prospects only Gustavsson and Sogaard appear to have legitimate #1G upside at this point. |

I think McGuire is a really good addition to the staff. Besides bringing in a fresh perspective and view of the organization's assets, he should be able to help in assessment of trades for roster players. The professional scouting for the Sens has been suspect and trades for/signing of active players has been an area of significant weakness. |

It could be worth it just to hear the over-animated verbal emphasis he'll inevitably be giving the Tkachuk-Norris pairing ("double-Dion" style), or what kind of insane nicknames he comes up with for guys like Stutzle, Zub, or Pinto.

Pierre is clearly very knowledgeable. He has an encyclopedia level understanding, he just is very awkward, and says weird things.
I spoke with someone who hypothesized that this is the first step in eventually making pierre GM of the team. Based on the involvment of Melnyk in the whole hiring process. |
