Ah.
The average salary for an NHL D is >$2.5m. I think Hamonic is a $3.5-$4.0m quality guy. He could sign for less because he wants to be there, but he’s basically a feistier, less defensive Tanev with a better shot.
Sutter, I guess, he’s a maybe. But as a player, watching the team commit $12m over four years to Beagle, would you sign a deal for half the $ and half the term as a guy you are clearly better than?
I’m sure there will be some bargains out there. Guys who are desperate to prove they belong in the NHL, but don’t expect great players to sign bargain deals here. Maybe in a few years when they are actually a team with a shot you can get the Joe Thornton forb$700k type deals. - 1970vintage
Well if they want that sort of money they can enjoy Calgary .

I tried this morning by bringing up Avs and Islanders, twice.
It’s up to you guys to bring up new material, there was the IIHL hockey, there are playoffs, there are Carols blogs that everyone seems to thank her for and then never discuss her material. I haven’t seen Carol constantly moaning about Benning, in fact I love how she can continuously put out a blog every other day and never seems to whine about Benning or Green.
I should acknowledge there were some comments about Luongo and Burrows back in Canuck colours. Point is there are numerous subjects to discuss. - Makita
I almost always comment on something specific from the blog, and generally introduce 3-4 new topics per blog. As I said they all fizzle, and we are reduced to arguing about the same poop. 🤷♂️

Maybe. It's easy to pull the shoulda, woulda, coulda card now after this season. Plus folks crying about Stecher (lol) Tanev and Marky. But not much whining on Leivo yet which is odd. When he has success I guess we'll hear it lol. Toffoli is a good target now for the anti-Benning crowd. All easy pickings.
Bottom line is he has drafted very well and needs to round it out. If he needs help doing it so be it. and again, Green isn't the problem. He has shown if he is given the right ingredients like last years PO's he can provide results. 2 years away...
- LordHumungous
You are all over the map though. Yes marky, tanev, stecher should have walked, so good job Benning. No toffoli shouldn't have walked, bad Benning, and that was a result of poor cap management on his part, nothing else (he wouldn't have traded a 2nd and a B prospect if he didn't think he could re-sign). Hindsight has nothing to do with mccann and forsling, cause those trades were made out of expediting the competitiveness of the team at the expense of under developed prospects who are now developed and doing well.
As far as leivo, I wanted toffoli and leivo, those were my two guys I wanted back, so I'm not sure who else agreed or disagreed.
And I don't disagree that his drafting has been good. What I disagree with is his constant trading of picks, not acquiring picks, or trading prospects to expedite things. You have a man who comes from a draft background, yet he trades materials in an area he is proficient in? He needs to draft, develop, stick to a thorough plan. |

Tinordi was an old Gillis favorite. He is Boston's 6/7 guy . Big kid can fight. He just had a good tilt with Matt Martin two games ago. They used him on the PP during the season so he does have that. It would be less than a mil to sign him. - VANTEL

I am talking for a Benn replacement or that Fatburger from the year before . A one year 900k contract.

Players with still upside would be great. There will be a lot of RFA's that are probably not qualified or players that will be on waivers thanks to last season. |

I agree, and the team (and fan base) needs to be prepared to deal with that.
Take Edler for example. They really don’t have anyone internally that they can lean on to replace him. It would need to be a gradual transition - like Schmidt replaces Edler, Joulevi replaces Schmidt and Rarhbone replaces Joulevi. That isn’t an improvement, but it’s necessary.
Will Wdler be willing to sign for less than his previous deal? Maybe, but if he’s going to be a top 4 guy again, then you have to expect any contract will be in the $4+ range and probably 2 years, maybe 1 but I doubt it.
If that doesn’t fit into the plan, they have to be willing to walk away. Just like they should have walked away when the Beale contract got to 4 years. Imagine if that and Roussel and Bäertschi and Sutter were all coming off the books this year? |

I will quickly comment of your last paragraph . I won't say how I really feel about fans complaining about cap space that we can't spend on new Free Agents because of contracts to old Free Agents. I guess my question would be was the kick to the nuts not hard enough the first time lets try again?
I don't know who will be here next year nor does anyone else on this site. I don't want Edler back . I would be willing to sign Hamonic 2x2.5 (and they can if they want to) I am not willing to sign him at 4x4. |

I know, there can be quite a few new topics, it is unfortunate that they seem to fizzle.
I will say that I have read a lot of comments about the Canucks, there have been decisions made I’m not pleased with but that goes for the entire existence of the Canucks.
I do not have apathy towards the team, when permitted to attend games I will go, I will cheer for a win, if they lose, I will cheer for them the next game to win, regardless of who owns the team, who is GM or coach. |

That’s what I’m saying. Have a plan and stick to it. If your max as a team is 2 x 2.5 and they player is asking fir 4 x 4 then walk away, like they should have done when Beagle got to 4 x $3. If they had been doing what you suggest all along they would certainly be in a better spot already. |

I get it, I'm half joking about the new material. Lots of new things get brought up all the time... but it being a Canucks blog and us all being Canucks fans/idiots, it will always sort of circle the drain back to whatever issue is pressing the Canucks. For better or worse, most people see that as Aqua/JB, so they get the most airtime.
During the spike of the pandemic we talked about the pandemic. During the storming of Congress we talked about that. Playoffs started we talked about that. However, when things get back to "normal", it's typically the Canucks.
I've brought up other subjects in here and other teams, and they either fizzle or people ask why they're getting brought up. There ain't much else going on |

Truly, I don’t think anyone who frequents this space is apathetic, even if they say they are. Nobody who was apathetic towards this team would waste so much time arguing about it.
I won’t likely go to another game live. A thousand dollars for a one night out is too much. |

My question still is , in a better position to do what? Sign a better UFA?
We had lots of cap space before we signed a high end Eriksson
We had cap space and signed Roussel Beagle Barisimov Gagner Schaller
We went low end Benn Fatenberg
I think so far the only FA that has given us a good return is Hamonic.
Benning will probably do it again next year with Reilly and Reinhart and we can get back into 5 more years of calling Benning a moron

the problem then turns into pro scouting.
He hit on Vanek/Vrbata/Ryan Miller
He has essentially whiffed on the rest (minus Ferland who i dont think its fair to judge based on circumstances)
At this point in time, I don't think anyone can defend the statement, that Benning and his evaluation of talent at the pro level, has not been the greatest.

Read your situation and pick your spots better. Pro scouting needs to be a focus moving forward.
