From The Athletic about Vancouver's protection list for the expansion draft (taken out the reasoning for the main guys):
Forwards
Brock Boeser
Bo Horvat
J.T. Miller
Elias Pettersson
Tanner Pearson
Tyler Motte: Durability concerns have dogged Motte over the past couple of seasons, but the speedy, workmanlike forward has become an elite penalty killer, a dangerous against the grain attacking threat and probably the club’s best bottom-six forward.
Matthew Highmore: The Canucks have at least one — and very probably two — forward slots that they can utilize to add talent to their roster from deeper squads ahead of the expansion process. Based on the club’s limited usage of Zack MacEwen last season, the short shrift given to Jonah Gadjovich after he made his brief NHL debut in May, Kole Lind’s underwhelming performance in six appearances down the stretch and the fact that the club would clearly love to shed the cap commitments owed to Jay Beagle, Loui Eriksson and Antoine Roussel; and Highmore would appear to have the inside track at the moment to be Vancouver’s seventh protected forward.
Considering some of the high-quality forward pieces that teams around the NHL won’t be able to protect in the expansion process, the club has to do better than protecting Highmore. They probably could stand to do better than protecting Motte too.
While the depth of talent likely to be made available to the Kraken is better on the back-end, if the Canucks make an expansion-related redistribution trade, it’s more likely to come in the form of an addition up front for these very reasons.
Defense
Nate Schmidt: Schmidt’s first Canucks season didn’t live up to lofty preseason expectations, but Schmidt played big minutes for the club and is more than capable of bouncing back.
Olli Juolevi: Juolevi has overcome some significant injuries in his NHL career and was relatively healthy and didn’t look out of place in a third pair role last season. The club will likely protect him and see if he can take advantage of a second full NHL season next year.
Tyler Myers: The club doesn’t really need to protect Myers, whose hefty contract almost certainly ensures that he’d make it through expansion unselected if the team decided not to protect him.
Because of Myers’ contract, Vancouver could easily monetize one of those three slots although that flexibility hinges on how the Canucks proceed in negotiations with their two key unrestricted free agent defenders Travis Hamonic and Alex Edler. This is also where things may get intriguing.
Jim Benning stated at his end-of-year media availability that the club would like to find a way to bring Hamonic back. The feeling is mutual as Hamonic raved about his family’s experience in Vancouver, the defined role he had on the team and playing for Travis Green in early May. He’s the most likely of the pending UFAs to return, as it stands.
It’ll be fascinating to see how the Canucks navigate the timing of a possible extension with expansion considerations looming, though.
Vancouver would be best suited to establish the parameters of an extension now, put the agreement in the drawer and wait until after the expansion draft to put pen to paper officially. This would allow the Canucks to expose Hamonic and Edler as pending UFAs (Seattle would only be able to earn negotiating rights if they selected one of them), protect three other defencemen, and then make any extensions with one or both players official after the draft.
This logic is guiding the Canucks’ thinking in how they approach talks with their unrestricted free agents.
We’ve noted previously that Madison Bowey’s acquisition quietly enhances the club’s flexibility.
The expansion draft rules force teams to expose at least one defensemen under contract next season to Seattle who’s played sufficient NHL games in the last two seasons and that’s where Bowey comes in handy as he fits the criteria.
Practically speaking it means that the Canucks can protect both Schmidt and Myers, but it also gives them an opportunity to think outside the box and make trades with zero worries of having to scramble to find a defender to expose. In fact, this off-ice value could give Bowey minimal but extant trade value in the event that there’s a team having difficulties meeting the exposure requirement on defense after making a trade.
The penalties for noncompliance in the expansion process are stiff, and the price of acquiring players that meet the exposure requirement could increase as we get closer to the roster freeze.

Essentially replaced Jasek with Plasek Jr.
It might actually make sense to let Jasek go play in Europe for another season. He is waiver eligible next season. So now Van can get another year of development out of him without potential of losing him. |

Most of what was written in this article has been discussed in here quite a bit, so nothing new, other than, Schmidt playing big minutes, I believe he was the 4th in minutes on the defense. |

I am Ted:
Sign Wennberg for 3C.
Try and buy low on a few of the following: Jake DeBrusk, Jake Bean, Jordan Greenway, Nolan Patrick, Tyler Benson. Ideally, I’d like to add DeBrusk, Greenway, and Bean. If the ask is low then add Patrick for 4C and see if he develops. See if we can exploit the expansion draft stuff.
I’m open to looking at trades, and if there is one we can win, then so be it. I’d like to add Cernak but not for the 1st. I’d consider a 2nd and Rathbone for him – maybe a bit more. I don’t know if this will work out but why not kick the tires on it.
I would look at making a big deal too for Boeser. I like the Kings’ prospect pool so Boeser + Juolevi for several of their top prospects is something I’d look at as well.
Ted is an idiot. |

If you mean losing him to Seattle, then you are mistaken, Seattle can still claim him. |
