Yeah, I think Toews was a cap casualty. He was due a significant raise and the Isles didn't have much wiggle room. He was pretty good during the regular season, but had a weak playoffs. - JohnScammo
Don't know if I'd say he had a weak playoffs...definitely some rough moments defensively and at the blue lines. But he also finished tied for the most points on the team among d-men in the playoffs, and even defensively wasn't bad on the whole. So it's not like he was horribly overwhelmed to the point where you'd move him out because of it.
He was purely a cap casualty: There was no way he could have been signed to a contract without disrupting other parts of the roster, and Lou made it a point to say how much it sucked having to make that decision. The only other thing they really could have done was trade Leddy instead, and that's assuming there was a market for him at a time where most teams who would want him were about as cap crunched as the Isles.
I just use it all as one more reason to hate Andrew Ladd with the fury of 1,000 exploding suns. Without that contract for a guy who sits around doing nothing, they no doubt would've kept Toews |

It took Pierre 12 games vs. Pens and Bruins to figure out that Pelech is a good player.. lol. It was almost nauseating listening to him finally talking about one of our guys not named Barzal. - niteislander
The way Pierre was puffing up Pelech during he post-game interview made me think he had an ulterior motive; i.e., since Pelech is an RFA with arbitration rights, convince him he's great so that he will demand a huge raise and cause the Isles even more cap problems. |

I am sure a lot of stuff factored into it.. cap money, didn't get enough for Leddy in a trade, too many bodies..etc. But the only time I ever heard Trotz throw his guy under the bus was that little move when the Isles were up 4-0 on his old team.. and they lost the game after it.. feel like when push came to shove Trotz said..you know what trade him. - niteislander
Fair points and I'm not saying it was a zero factor. But ultimately, it's Lou's call, not Barry's, so I just think Lou saw that he was not a playoffs performer, and that was the main reason. |

It was kind of tough to justify putting a guy on LTIR when he played a game in the playoffs the prior season. Can't really do that if there's no injury.
"Ass Sucking Syndrome" probably doesn't qualify as an injury, although Ladd does suffer from a fairly acute case of ASS - eichiefs9

Exactly. And Pierre knows the Isles don't have superstar money to throw at him, because of the cap. |

Think what they could do with this roster with another 8 million or so (Ladd & Hickey)instead of being dead money |

Tampa is just an unbelievable team but if we can play our game to the best of our ability it will be a great series. |

Fair enough. I think I said at one point that it was a cap issue. But I just think he got exposed on D one too many times in the playoffs. And I'm not sure, but I think it was in a crucial game against Tampa? |

That along with the flat cap. As tough as this past offseason was, the upcoming one might be even trickier.
I can say for sure I won't care as much if the Isles rattle off eight more wins |

His knee Surgery/injuries took his speed down exponentially and he wasn't fast to begin with.. I am pretty sure they could have justified it if needed. They do it everywhere else in the league.

Going to be interesting to see what happens this offseason. Can Eberle be moved and Palms gets re-signed and Wahlstrom or Palms is on the first line next year? |

Yeah, Tampa was a tougher series for him. Like I said, there were rough and bright spots, but I don't think the rough ones were deal-breakers, especially considering he was only in his second NHL season. They spent a lot of years developing him the right way and I'd guess they'd have been happy to keep him if they could have. |

Isles have $27 mill coming off the cap next year.. Pelech will get a 2 year bridge like the rest of the guys and then they have plenty of money.
In 2 years they will lose Ladd contract and I am guessing by that point they will get a bigger cap number to work with league wide. By then I would Imagine Varly is gone too. |

My guess is you wait to see who Seattle takes and go from there.. Ebs and Leddy will be exposed is my guess.

I think you'd probably have to choose between Palms OR Eberle. Seems unlikely that they can pay for both, unless they move Bailey. Which is......also very unlikely. |

Losing Ladd would be best but it will probably come down to losing Leddy or Eberle. Bolduc give the Isles a good option on D if he is ready to make the jump next year. |

Cannot see being able to keep Palms and Eberle and I pick Palms any day of the week. Bailey I want to keep the way he has come through in the playoffs. Bailey is on my good list now. |
