The thing with Wang is he truly meant well and wanted what was best for the team and it’s fans. The guy thought he was doing the right thing he just wasn’t. - Cptmjl
I thought Charles really did mean well but he really messed up when he did not hand the keys to Neil Smith and let him do his thing. |

Agreed that was a bit of a whacky decision but who has hired Smith since then? Maybe there’s more to his story that we don’t know about? Also, if Snow wasn’t hired instead of Smith we’re most likely not where we are right now. |

Not sure but they need to start looking at the seven day forecast before they schedule these games |

Neil Smith was a chance for Charles to make everything right. He was a Cup winning GM who grew up working for Al and Bill and he really wanted the job and turn the Isles around. I think Neil was hurt with how things went down and could not get another GM job. It would have been interesting to see how things would have went if Neil had a run for a number of years. |

That was the year we had 2 picks in top 5. there was a really decent shot we win the lottery b/c of it and would have had Thornton.. (one one team could moved back then.. actually made a lot more sense than the current lottery). Worse we could do is 4 and 5.. that is what we ended up with .. took Luongo and Brewer. out Goalie and Stay home D-man of the future... Milbury traded them both soon after - niteislander
Yep, he built the defensive corps he referred to as the Redwood Forrest, then dealt all of them
I understood the thought process with drafting DP but it was just so unnecessary with a guy like Luongo already in the fold. Coming out of the draft, DP was seen as an elite athlete who could fire/pass a puck better than any goalie before him. Milbury had spent years watching Brodeur essentially be a third defenseman helping the Devils transition the puck and thiught DP would do the same. So we draft him and soon after the NHL instituted the trapezoid

Wang went rogue and hired a Nolan without consulting Neil. Then he started the committee thing which I'm pretty sure was not discussed at Neil's hiring. That was enough for him and Lafontaine to get the hell out if Dodge |

Charles treated Neil like a rookie GM who had no idea what he was doing. He should have done that with Milbury and Garth. Look at the FA's Neil was able to sign in 40 days. |

Such an unbelievably bad time to be an islanders fan - Cptmjl
It was so painful... they used to send this Islander's magazine out to season ticket holders that was actually pretty cool. You would get some great stories on their draft picks and what they were doing and how they looked. So imagine reading about guys like Brewer, JP Dumont, Tim Connoly, Chara, etc... finally seeing them on the ice for the Islanders and then watching these friggin dopes trade them for a bag of pucks that would leave that summer and watch them go on to have great careers... was unbelievable.
If the Isles kept their picks from 1991- 1997 they would have had a BEAST of a Back Line and Goalie.. Luongo/Salo Brewer, Chara, Redden, Kasper, Lachance, Mezei, Strudwick, lukovwich,
then forwards u have JP Dumont, Bertuzzi, connolly, ziggy, Rup, Pyatt, Torres, (Gaborik or Danny Heatly if u keep Loungo and don't take DP),

He tried to be non-political in the most political place on Earth.. Nassau County. it crushed him.. if he played the game he would have gotten everything he wanted done. That said.. this team is not in long Island without him.

Islanders Playoff Run Boosts UBS Arena Season Ticket Sellout
(Sportico)
It’s all coming together for the New York Islanders.
Boosted by another deep run in the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs as the Nassau Coliseum nears its closing, season ticket sales at the new UBS Arena at Belmont Park have gone through the roof. By mid-week, the club expects to reach its cap of 15,000 full season ticket equivalents in the 17,000-seat building that’s scheduled to open next season in Elmont, N.Y., next to the famous horse racetrack.

Still hard to see things working out with that lousy ownership though. Milbury would have still be ordered to ship players out. |

listening to NHL radio yesterday was just painful.. How can these guys still not have a clue who the Islanders are at this point. They have been shoving it up your keester for 3 years. It's not a friggin trap, the don't goon it up or take runs at guys and it's certainly not "boring hockey". They are just completely oblivious to what's happening on the ice. Four lines on non-stop forechecking and playing responsible is just good fundamental well coached hockey.
They even brought up Vasilevskly being a Vezina finalist numerous times without mentioning a word or stat line on Varly. Varly had better Save %, Better GAA and more shut outs despite playing much less games. - niteislander
I've never seen somebody so consumed with how others view the Isles. Facking weird man |
