This is completely ridiculous. They're picking the wrong arena for battle; they have to fight at the draft.
Draft eligibility should expand for teams drafting in their own region. So the NHL would give each team a region, and in the first round of the draft, they could draft players who are D - 1 year instead of D year. That way if a superstar is rising the ranks, your team has dibs on him (you'd still have to use high priced draft picks; that's the trade off).
We're all going to talk about Connor Bedard two years from now - by all rights, Vancouver should be able to draft him next year if the player agrees to it. It's both a money move and a common sense move.
It was, to me, a crime when Montreal has to wait until Pittsburgh rolls into town before they can watch Mario Lemieux play. Enough is enough... there's now hockey development everywhere, it's time for local superstars to play for their cities again. - archromat

how the (frank) do you think the habs, leafs and red wings ended up with all the Cups in the O6 days? - Gramps28
Apparently Montreal was helped by the fact they "set up networks of junior and senior leagues in Quebec and elsewhere and those players would belong to Montreal in the future. This system ensured a near monopoly of players from Quebec". Had nothing to do with "Territorial Rights".

well, if you can't officially have proper "territorial rights", setting up a network of junior and senior leagues in Quebec that basically ensures a monopoly on players born in the province sounds like a nice compromise loll |

Of course.
Just meant it wasn't a league mandate. They were smart enough to basically pre-sign-up all the youth hockey talent by running all those leagues.

yeah, I was simply pointing out how close it was to having actual territorial rights, but I know what you mean
the NHL should give the habs first dibs on all Quebecers at the draft at least every 2 years, just to thank them for their rich historical contribution to the sport. |

that's not the way it works, friendo.
you're supposed to make predictions left and right. tons of them. say them with conviction. endlessly brag about the ones that you get right and never mention the ones you get wrong ever again. |

Count the hits and ignore the misses like a religious person praying for a lottery.
I prayed 157 000 times. On the 157 101 try I won ten bucks therefore prayer works and god is real.
