pretty good trivia question going around on twitter...

only 1 team of the last 30 years of Stanley Cup champions didn't have a player drafted in the first 3 picks of the draft on its playoff roster

name it

BINGO!

they definitely matter when you are the worst team in the league at them
- jimbro83

Vegas, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Washington and Minnesota all lost more faceoffs than they won this year. Minnesota was 4th worst, only 2% better than the Rangers.

The Canucks were top 5 in faceoff wins.

They're not that meaningful over a full year.

At even strength you lost 249 more faceoffs than you won.
On the powerplay you lost 5 more than you won.
shorthanded? 80 more losses than wins.

you also took the 5th fewest faceoffs of any team.

Like it really doesn't add up to much over a season. It's really about 6 times per game you lost a puck battle instead of winning it.

My guess would be the 96 Red Wings. Scratch that I forgot Shanahan was on that squad.

Add the fact that we couldn't recover or control the puck after the loss and that is the problem.

That goes to BINGO's point. If you have the horses to to win the puck back, the loss of the faceoff is negligible. Vegas has the guys to get the puck back...we have young guys who are still learning to do that.

luckily i started from the most recent and went backwards. was easy to knock out like half of the 20 teams right off the bat

so since the Islanders are the only team if the final 4 without a guy once drafted top 3 in the draft I think they are now disqualified

I was just going through the 2003 Devils but they had Niedermeyer at 3rd overall.

Yep.

Okay, you lost the faceoff. Now you have to get the puck. That's what Vegas is so good at. They might lose that initial puck battle but then they go create another one and take the puck away. They don't back off and try to clog lanes, they attack the puck carrier.
