His contract is poop. Oh well. You are trading a 24 year old Winger whos over a point per game in the regular season because he has a bad contract. What value to you honestly see getting for him. I can tell you right now not many teams are going to be able to take that contract.
People here suggest Eichel. So dealing a 90 point guy who sucks in the playoffs (apparently) for a guy who makes close to the same $ and hasnt BEEN to the playoffs in his career.
What other options are there that get you the value of Marner? You going to make a Thornton type deal where you get a quantity of average players for your star? Any way you look at it, if any deal was to be made, similar cap would need to come back - xShoot4WarAmpsx

We’re soft as (frank), let’s get someone who can play with some balls if we’re trading Marner. I’ll take Hamilton but not sure he helps the softness.
Maybe Vegas would give us Marchessault and Tuch for Marner....hopefully they throw in 1 of their goalies too. |

This incident alone should lessen Marc Staal's UFA value. #bongos #slapchop #fackingembarrassing |

Everybody chased the toughness out of TO.
SkIlLz is the way to the promise land, doesn’t matter if they won’t go into a corner to get the puck. Somebody was wrong ( a whole bunch of somebody’s )

No why would you do that?
1) No Guarantee Toews is even coming back. Theres been no news and his symptoms seem similar to what Rossi of the Wild had but more severe
2) Why would want one to the best 2 Way Centermen in the league on your team to play wing?
3) Toews isnt that offensively gifted. He's on average a 60 point producer.
4) Even if he comes back he probably wont be any good. I doubt he's working out if he is lethargic. Probably going to lose a lot of muscles mass combined with missing a full year of hockey.
5) Why is CHI moving him? They have 10 mill in free cap space with him on LTIR why would they move him to add half to their cap? - xShoot4WarAmpsx
- He's still getting paid $7M.
- 2 years ago he scored 35 goals and had 81 points - his best season ever on that front.
- one of the better face-off C in the League.
Of course there's no guarantee he comes back. It was all hypothetical on IF he comes back.

Yes two years ago. Pre-injury. I'll let Chicago keep him and his comeback if there is one.

Did Boston trade Sequin and win the Cup...even after trading Kessel too?
BTW, we're still paying $1.2m for Kessel while Boston got a massive haul from the Leafs.
Kinda makes you think the timing of trading a "star" player is an important thing to consider for the future of the trading team.
Does it make sense to WAIT to see if Marner grows balls?
Let's go with this hypothetical, Marner sucks again and we're stuck with his cap hit and no playoff points....then what? Window closing until Matthews deal is done.
Let's go with this hypothetical, maybe, just maybe, some GMs around the league STILL value Marner's in-season scoring ability and trade us a sh1t load of value.
Some times you have to cut bait and run.
Marner is great in the regular season. Will he be great in the playoffs...sure, maybe, at some point...but maybe not.
Will Toronto have a 1st round exit next year with Marner, maybe, probably.
Will Toronto win the Cup with all of that Cap locked up in 4 players who haven't performed well in the 1st round and a flat Cap for a few years to come....doubt it.
Sooooooooo....change some sh1t before it's too late. Other players need deals too...always....every year someone else needs more money.
Matthews has 4 year left???
The Leafs, like all teams, have a small window to win. Otherwise, Cap hits, old players, young UFAs leaving....blah, blah, blah...will mess up the team's roster anyway and it will have to be rebuilt again anyway. It HAS to happen. It's the way the system works.
It sucks, the thought of trading Marner, but there are so many other things at play that it may have to be done....OR should be done.
This team will not win this way. Period. We've watched the same thing for 4 or 5 years now.
My two cents....here is one cent back. |

No. Hamilton is actually realistic. - Steven_Seagull
How's Hamilton realistic? He's going to get a big long contract. Leafs only have 11 mill to add: a backup G, 2 Dmen and 4 forwards. At 750k for all positions you are still looking at 4.5/11.7 mill in cap space gone. With 7.2 Mill maybe you could land him but I think he probably get 8 mill. That leaves you with absolutely no cap space. Are you really sold on Campbell as the #1 that you are willing to go with a league minimum G?
One of the big issues in playoffs was lack of depth on forward. Having a bottom 6 of mostly league minimum forwards isnt going to fix that. Right now all the pressure is on the top 4. If they dont produce the leafs lose.
You cant move a D because at the end of the day all of them have some form of NTC.
Realistically the Leafs should save that space and bargain hunt. There are going to be guys who you probably expected to get more but end up taking less because teams are no longer in the market. You could look at guys like Bozak, Hoffman, Coleman who you could possibly get cheap.

Looks a lot better than what was iced in playoffs

Taking a calculated move at this time in hockey with a flat cap and trading the highest paid, under performing winger. It sucks. But seems to be the way. |
