Why is it a load of crap trading the 2nd? Did it not happen?
No one foresaw the flat cap/pandemic, but you can't say Jim hadn't put himself in an awkward position even before that.
And Benning signed a whole lot of players before they even played a game for the Canucks. Better to sign someone you traded for and actually saw play/see them fit in rather than 0 games (Sutter) or all his FA spending. - NewYorkNuck
Are you going to tell me you thought LA was going to give us Toffoli for free?

That's a weird pivot, and it really doesn't make sense to what I said.
"That really is a load of crap about trading the second."
Why is it a load of crap to talk about trading the second? They traded a 2nd plus Madden for him, then decided not to resign him. Most people here didn't want to trade those pieces in the first place, but came to accept it because they figured they'd resign him. |

I am trying to figure out what you are mad about ? That Jim made a trade and sent something back ?
That he sent back a second and Madden for a potential 30 goal scorer?
Or that he didn't predict a world pandemic a month before ?

Trotz Is the best coach on earth and Travis Green Isn't qualified to coach at this level at least not yet It would be fun to see these two switch teams next season with the same players on each squad that are playing for the 2 respective teams now and just see what happens. That would be a fun experiment. - Shady1962

I don’t get it either. People keep viewing Benning through the lens during the first half of his tenure here(I didn’t like him then either). His moves since then are a lot more reasonable, Toffoli is likely still here if not for the pandemic. |

I think Benning can be a dummy same as the next guy but he is saying he didn't want Benning to trade for him in the first place but is upset that he didn't re-sign him.
It sounds like a discussion I have no chance of winning.

Jesus you're dense, and you never answer a question straight. You said "That really is a load of crap about trading the second" and I asked why it's a load of crap about trading the second. Then you just answered that with other questions and still haven't answered that... so go ahead, the floor is yours.
It's not difficult to understand not wanting to trade for him in the first place, but then accepting it happened and being fine with it if he resigns him. But he didn't, so then the question becomes why is a rebuilding team trading a high draft pick and a good prospect for a rental when the team was not ready to truly compete in the playoffs?

Seriously ,pick a side . Did you want him or you didn't want him.
It is a load of crap. The word trade literally means swap.
The fact that you think you can trade and not give up a something back is pretty dense. Truthfully I could care less if you like it or not what Benning did.
Rentals for playoffs happen all the time , deal with it. |

That really is a load of crap about trading the second. When the Canucks traded for him the league announced that next years cap was 3 mil higher than it actually was. Many teams made moves thinking they had more money.
There isn't a person I know of that predicted a flat cap of and a pandemic that shut down the world back in February.
If Benning signed Toffoli for four years at 18 million dollars after playing 17 games the media and the fans would have a field day.
Don't you remember what it was like in here before free agency? It was close to a 6 to 4 vote in favor of NOT committing to Toffoli. - VANTEL
You are complicating things. Covid, the flat cap, the divisional alignment - all have nothing to do with signing or not signing Toffoli. You and I were both against signing that deal. We were both wrong.

You are constantly claiming that the Canucks have plenty of cap space and that they will be compliant. I don’t even have to go back more than one day to find examples of this. How does a pandemic and a flat cap have any impact on that? |

I disagree. Toffoli is having his best year ever . His time spent with Canucks all 10 regular season and 7 playoff games) he was closer to what Pearson did who Vancouver fans showed their displeasure with when he signed his new contract.
I remember here on these boards, quite a few posters saying do not sign him ,Jake was faster and had 18 goals the year before.
Pearson signed 3 years at 9 .6 mil and had played 121 games and had 40 goals. Can you imagine if Benning signed Toffoli at 4 years 18 mil. Hindsight is a beautiful thing but I really doubt Toffoli was scoring 30 goals playing most of the year with JTM and Brock. - VANTEL
For my part, I've been anti Jake ever since McCann got traded instead of him. Never liked Jake from draft day. |

They definitely seemed to have traded the wrong kid from that draft. That being said, McCann seems more like a complementary winger which aren’t really core pieces |

Come on man ,There was a a bunch of trades at TDL just like every other one. There was 3 mil more announced available for this years cap . TDL came and went and teams made their moves and then the NHL announces they are taking that 3 mil back.
You are going to stand here and say it had nothing to do with decisions about next years signings?

People forget when McCann got drafted and asked what he felt , I think his answer was it is what it is or whatever.
Both turned out to be bad choices IMO

I liked JV and thought he had potential, after he'd show momentary glimpses of his abilities.
I was less interested in McCann and have never thought he was a big loss.
I agreed with the decision to re-up JV after his decent season the year before.
I also agreed with cutting him after his apparent offending.

You really can't fairly judge the Toffoli trade in hindsight
The pandemic happened , the time off the bubble and Toffolis injury.
With a healthy Toffoli, maybe maybe we beat Vegas in the last game which would change the end if year signings, and following years expectations.
It was a good trade at the time and the chemistry that it appeared to have in limited time was what the trade was made for |
