tampa gave up a first, third and 4th for a rental d man this year - homiedclown
Tampa gave that up for Savard at a cap hit of just over $1M, while Ristolainen is 5 times that much against the cap, or 2.5 times that much even if the Sabres retain the max allowable.
Also, Savard is actually decent at defense.
Even if you think they're comparable players, the cap hit is at least 2.5 times more than what Tampa had to pay.

Yes, absolutely. His finger prints are on the ground work.
Hard to really tell if his input was the deciding factor.
Lots of trades though for "character " players the past few years. Especially at the deadline.
Whomever hit on kuchorov and point definitely deserves most of the credit.
Kuch on IR this season is an all time genius move. - not Steve.
Detroit really hasnt wowed me .... - Boss34
He hasn't done much yet but he's only been there for two drafts. Again, with a scorched earth. Nothing worth trading, bunch of old useless crap, like the 14 Sabres. If him and his scouts are half as good as they were in Tampa, Detroit will be on top again in 3 years.

He's a cap dump to get the previous 3 players I listed and 11.
Taking those 4 is about 10M. What do you know.
Edit: 11.5M
Lets them take Jack and use the extra 1.5 for re-signing. - TheSabresTaco
Shaw isn't playing...he'll be on LTIR...has zero impact on their ability to sign Jack if he's on LTIR or traded.
Now, if he plays, that thinking goes out the window.

This is a big year for them, they have cap space and a lot of picks to pluck some good hockey players from teams. Think they have 7 picks in the first 3rnds this year, and 3 or 4 in the first 2rnds next year.

Using LTIR still penalizes teams one way or another.
You see teams do cap dumps every year. So yes, he's not playing for certain. But they might want that money.

Right, mostly Bonus Overages ( or is it Bone Us).
That's why Sabres shouldn't accept him in any deal though, IMO...does zero for us and for them.
I love Dach and see him as the primary piece for sure. I'm not overly enamored with Strome either. He's a 3C who can play up for a bit. He's ok but, It would depend on what his next contract would expect to be.
11 is weaker than other trade contenders, and gets into the 2nd of 3rd tier of the draft. They would need to supply a really good 3rd piece ... maybe Lukas Reichel?
Dach, 11 , Reichel ... IDK. I like Dach alot though.

The way things are looking, we wouldn't have to put him on LTIR. Multiple high picks is dangerous for bonus overages down the road, you're right there.

Why so big on him? - DirtyDan
Love that kid...only 20-1/2.
Watched him play on Chicago a bit last year...started as 3rd line Wing...by playoff/in he had surpassed Strome and was their 2C...looked very good doing it too, carrying the puck in. He reminded me very much of a young Jack.
Out of young Centers I have seen play in NHL, he is probably the best so far and has lots of runway left.
Out of young, promising C's I'd rank
Dach
Byfield
Zegras

They're nuts if he is in play...if he is...see what else KA can RIP out of that team of and make the trade!

If he’s a young jack why would a team trade him and other assets then Increase their cap 9 million dollars by taking on Jack’s huge contract.
It’s why I don’t see teams falling over each other to trade their 1-2 best prospects plus a 1st for him.
