I don't believe that a player like Marner who is capable of being 4th overall in scoring, will never put up playoff numbers. Name another example.

Hossa went scoreless in his first 12 playoff games. Won three Cups, but not for Ottawa cause they traded him.

- Zezel

Hossa was a perennial Selke player and didn't soak up nearly as much team salary as Mitch.

Maybe not the best comparison?

Marner is entitled to get as much as he wants. BUT, he has to expect massive backlash if he busts in the playoffs. He put himself in this position.

its probably even money the Leafs never make it out of round 1 on his 6 year deal

I'd take that bet if a book somehow went insane and offered it.

A 1000x this.

It's a tournament and there's only one prize.

Agree, love the Leafs, love the Jays, Raptors are ok, but much less of a basketball fan mostly because I can't get around a rule that if there is a minute left you have to punch a guy in the mouth foul the other team to get enough possessions to win. It goes against the notion of good sportsmanship. I'm down by four with 30 ticks left so l'll just kick that playier in the balls hope he misses the foul shots and try the old three pointer. Doesn't work for me. Officiating is horrible in basketball, even worse than the NHL playoffs. Leafs have solid loyal fans, some expecting more than others, the talent is there, coaching and team make up needs work, luck needs to improve. It will happen. And there is luck involved in winning in the playoffs, whether it is a crossbar, a post or your one of your best players being gooned injured badly 3 minutes into the round.

Well he wasn't that player until later in his career in fairness.

"Great memories" and being "satisfied" are two different things.

I remember being absolutely devastated to the point at which I refused to talk about those Conference Finals losses for years. I still haven't opened my "The Passion Returns" VHS tape that was given to me for birthday one of those years.

Playoff runs can be fun but they're also heartbreaking. Bragging about winning a couple of rounds is patently absurd. Like, I get it: enjoy the moment. But to hold a couple of minor playoff runs as some sort of yardstick of success? Ridic.

- mjones242

If only the leafs could "brag" about winning a couple of playoff rounds in the past 17 years.
But they cant...cause theyre pathetic.
So good on other teams who have had consistent playoff runs.
Also who cares if playoff runs can be heartbreaking, of course they are or you wouldn't be a fan, but if youre not over the loss 2 days later, then maybe youre too into it lol.

Maybe 3 days lol

Marner got 69 points playing on the 3rd line and 16 minutes a night in his 2nd season.

Marner has been a better regular season and playoff performer, clearly

- RogerRoeper

Tkachuk got 77 playing on the second line with 17 minutes 3 years ago, so what.
2 years ago he got 61 in 69 games playing 17 minutes, don't pretend Marner is that far ahead.

the contract Hossa signed with the Sens in 2005 was 15% of the cap at the time.

Uh, why? He's far worse of a player.
- RogerRoeper

how many pucks over glass penalties does he have in the playoffs?
Far less than Marner.

Marner doesn't. Oh and how many points would he have playing with Mathews for 24 minutes a night.
- bobbyisno1

Ya we said the same about barrie.

The Jack the Ripper of hockey. Ended the career of the best defenseman the Leafs had seen in decades - no suspension, no penalty and after he was no longer of use to the Blackhawks and only owed $1 million a year for 2 seasons, ($7 million cap hit) helped the Hawks cheat the cap by being injured (career ending jock itch) to avoid the cap hit.

Why? Because you say so?

Tkachuk could literally throw a few hits and walk away saying he contributed more for less money than Marner this season.

Did you watch him this year? he was like a deer in head lights.
Where did that come from, haven't seen that in previous years.

- bobbyisno1

He was like that the last 3 games of the series, and he wasnt the only one.
The team choked, the pressure got to all of them

If Tkachuk does want out of Calgary, the Leafs should do everything they can to bring him here

Lets not forget, that the cap was suppose to be at 87m or more now....which would have made these 40m in 4 forwards more palatable.

Oh god not the Marner for Takchuck talk.

Lets pay a guy 9M on his next deal who gets 70 points and is just as bad in playoffs.

its a downgrade but it is new so fans are happy.

It's like you peered into my brain and extracted my exact observations on basketball.

Per hockey, Snakevares's freak injury is the only thing that has kept me from going on full tilt with this latest Leafs post-season meltdown. I really do think his loss was a lot more devastating than people are willing to give it credit for.

Teams are already so closely matched in terms of skill that losing an elite player can really shift the balance more-than-slightly from one team to another.

Not saying if the Leafs get past the Habs that they necessarily go further, but holy (frank), the Leafiness of Snake getting horribly injured surely is proof of God's existence (and His obvious Leafs hatred).

He plays the kind of game this team is lacking, regardless of how simple some are and think this is nothing but a game of how many points you score in the regular season.

That being said, my guess would be if he wants out of Calgary it's to play in the states. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree Marner was the most underperforming player on the Leafs by miles. Needs to spend some time and effort improving shot and strength. He falls down if someone farts in his direction.

Ya no he couldnt.
Marner was 1.22 ppg this season
.57 ppg in the playoffs.

But lets not get carried away. Shiny new toy syndrome for sure
