Matthews wasn't supposed to be this good? Really? Matthews was considered a generational, franchise-changing prospect when he was drafted.
You think Marner earned his bonuses based off of his junior career? - PatC80
I don't remember this.
I remember him being number 3 after Echiel if he was in the previous draft.
and ye sos course, as does ever other prospect. |

Matthews missed the 2015 draft by 2-3 days if I recall and people thought he would go second behind McDavid if he was eligible..
But Marner had a good junior career, you would think Lou Lamoriello would have paid him for what he accomplished as a 17 yr old playing in London

dude, that's brutal. I didn't know that the Leafs were willing to go over $11M if Mitch signed for 8 years... How was that not "palatable" - PatC80

These numbers help to illustrate why it is so difficult to see a path to a Mitch Marner contract settlement any time soon.
but yeah, 11 mil over 8 not palatable... (frank)ing mitch |

I agree that the majority probably didn't have him scoring 40 as a rookie, but he was insanely hyped and for good reason. The only reason why he didn't get as much is because he had the misfortune of going the year after McDavid. |

I remember the debates over if Marner was better than Matthews. It was pretty even at most points.
There was a time where the majority in here said Marner was more important to this team than Matthews. |

Starting to get the sense that Santo thinks the Leafs should have actually drafted Laine instead |

I knew Matthews and Marner would be really good players.
Again there was a time Marner was more important than Matthews according to some on here. |

If you wan't to play that game then the Leafs have the same number of cup wins as Vegas has in the last 4 years so their success is identical. - Santo_44
sure, and the leafs also have the same amount of success as the Sabres and Red Wings in that time frame.
leafs are a flawed roster......you're closer to a tear down rebuild than you are to a cup win. |

You mean playing with grown men as a 17 year old and slaughtering the league didn't stunt the hype?
Maybe they're talking about that part he stepped into the world cup before playing an NHL game and warmed the bench, people probably decided then he wasn't supposed to be that good.
Honestly. 🤦🏻♂️ |

good idea... Maybe ask Shanny if he remembers what it feels like to win a Cup? Don't forget to mention at least several times in that letter, to not re-sign Joe Thornton - PatC80
