All the crap being directed at Marner and his contract is identical to our history here on Willy. As its turned out maybe Nylander has a great contract for what he puts up. Maybe we were wrong.
I wonder if we might be wrong about Marner also. |

Just go ahead and google 'auston Matthews draft reports' and click on literally any of the articles that come up. It will take you about 10-15 seconds to realize you have no idea what you're talking about whatsoever. |

Meh, not much to see there, looks like most people thought it was a bit much but hopeful he could live up to it. Pretty similar to what it is now except he hasn't lived up to it playoff wise. Generally just happy that he would be back for the season. - 13sundin13
Would have been manageable if Cap had continued to grow. Bad luck for Leafs to have handed out their big contracts just before pandemic but leafy as usual |

As I posted earlier, when Marner sign it was expected the cap would go up each year.
It should now be around 87...but covid. |

Your math is slightly off, as Marner did receive $850,000 per year X 3 years in performance bonuses throughout his ELC.

aren't there different levels of bonus an entry level deal could have?
I think Marner got a lower level bonus plan

Marner just needed to take 9.5 (6-8 years) and nobody says a word about him..its viewed as a hometown discount and we all love him forever.

Marner is not worth his contract. - Steven_Seagull
Is that all that matters now? That’s what alot of people said about Willy. Most teams would jump at the chance to get Marner, he would be worth it to them.
Fourth in league scoring and kills penalties. But he had a bad playoff so he’s garbage. |

Matthews should have been 8 years
Marner shouldn’t got any more then $9
Nylander while sitting at home eating bon bons and playing video games should have been shipped to Calgary for Doogie.
We could be arguing why we lost to Winnipeg instead of the Habs. 😬 |

Rielly is not as good as the Toronto media build him up to be. Also he becomes a UFA at the end of next season and with him wanting a big raise not to many teams will give up much for him. |

Unless he gets 8mil...what is a "big raise?" He's a 6-6.5mil defender and should get that. He's been underpaid for a large portion of his deal. |

I don't even think it's viewed as hometown discount at that point, he's paid on par with what he should be paid at 9.5.
Instead he's viewed as the guy who viewed raping the team for every penny as more important than taking a fair market deal and trying to bring a cup home. |

You wonder if he could go back right now and change is contract to something like that if he would.
He would probably be feeling less pressure. |
