Trade a 6th round pick to Edmonton for James Neal and their 1st round pick this season.

Buyout Neal costs 1.9 for 4 seasons. That's fine because the 1st will off set that for the last 3 seasons. making it like a 2.8 cap hit.

Even better, if that 20th overall pick doesn't make the NHL, it just stays a 1.9 mil cap hit

Sometimes that's the price you pay for trying to win.

Steve Yzerman does that poop all the time. Greatest GM ever some will tell you.

Thanks man but at the end of the day i'm just like one of you guys. Wether I was good at hockey or not 30 years ago in inconsequential. I'm not sure why I busted that out except I guess I needed to say I understood what elite goaltending meant.

It is what it is, i'm pretty sure we all understand how goaltending can change a team's fortunes during the playoffs.

I want a Dman that can control the play at both ends of the ice, the closest we've come to that IMO is Ohlund.

Once we have that, we'll be in a better position to win it all than we've ever been.

- golfingsince

Thanks for sharing. I agree on Ohlund. He was well on his way until the eye injury.

As for me, since you shared, I thought I was pretty good until I got drafted by and played for a pretty crappy USHL team. Got pummeled back to reality. Still loved the experience playing my way up the ladder from Novice upward. Made the NHL draft list but was told not to show because I was unrated and had no chance of getting picked. Cheers man, there can never be too many Goalies on this thread.

If it was 5 years ago I'd be on that train. But now, with the team as it is and the cap issues, I don't think it's worth it as much.

I don't get the whole worship/hate thing. Its the same as Dmen, either a first pairing defensemen or belongs in the AHL.

Yzerman has done good and is definitely in the top half of GM's in the league, probably top 10. He's got to take Det out of the basement.

I don't know how the Sedin's will do. I think they are very smart hockey players and that might transition into management, like Bill Guerin. He has made some good moves so far with Minny in 1 season. See how they do next year and how he handles Kiprizov situation.

Oh I disagree, there can definitely be too many goalies on this thread. The goalie is always the crazy one on the team .

What other use would you get out of that cap space more than another 1st round pick? ELC are good especially with players out playing those years of the contracts. The chances of you getting a player for 2.8M a season for 3 seasons that out plays, a 20oa pick is highly unlikely. Especially with Benning drafting.

STL drafted Robert Thomas as 20oa and two seasons later won a cup.

This is similar to your JTM/Minny proposal.

I agree with the thinking and like the idea but I don't see JB thinking this way. He would be taking away cap space next season which will be his make or break season.

Just like you mentioned the other day, they always seem to be in between strategy timelines.

He has to be crazy to stand in front of all those pucks being fired at him. Actually some of the crazy is because of all the ones that wrung off my head 😵‍💫

I guess the main difference with the Miller trade is they aren't giving up something off the roster. This way you wouldn't be subtracting from the team right now to get something that has more value down the line. Maybe if they are lucky, they draft a player that in a year can take Miller or Horvat's spot in the line up and they could be sold or whatever JB wants to do with them on expiring contracts. Not feel the need to pay them extra because there is no one to replace them.

All just thoughts in my head

I don't believe in doing certain things at certain times only. I would utilize all possible ways to make the team better.

I'd do it and this is the type of thing that many of us have been advocating from the start.

I just don't see JB doing it at this point.

I just think they'll be pushing in that window, and tying up 2 mil isn't the best option for 4 years with their current cap.

I would say that signing a player for 3 mil to outplay a rookie is more likely, especially since they're not trusted in the same scenarios.

I also don't see JB selling off cap space to plan for the future. Not his MO at all. He likes to spend those dollas and ship out draft picks

Carolina did it a few years ago with TO's first rounder, but their cap situation is much better managed than the Canucks'

Yeah should have happened at least a couple times before.

Right now though, I think the roster is more set than it was before with still some cap space. After they sign Petey and Hughes. Got a 1 or 2 year window where right now doesn't look like another large contract is going to be needed to be handed out.

I'm not even sure it it's JB's call to not do it but possibly FA's. Either way. They messed up that part also in the past.

Especially if the team wants to get back to the playoffs next season.

Have you seen the 3M players on the Canucks and how they are doing. Hogz kicked their asses last year.

Carolina did it also while contending. Now when they are in more cap crunch, they have another 1st round pick to add to be a cheaper contract

Not that I agree with the signing, but Pearson is doing well. Clearly I agree with the other dead weight

Hog did great, but Lind Gadj Woo all not doing much (just chose second rounders).

I wouldn't oppose the move, but it's been the exact opposite of JB's MO so far, and with his job on the line I doubt he's going to make moves that will hurt the team in the short run and potentially help them in the long.

Wasn't Gadjovich a point per game in the AHL this season?

You have to show your gang colours first. Black for the whiners and a lovely shade of sky blue for the cheerleaders.

So what is it?
