I don't know why this happens, but years ago, when I officiated, I considered a save as possesion, so whistle blew on delayed penalty, assist for goalie if he was 3rd person to play they puck and no assists on rebound goals.😁

Deflection is a touch that can get you the goal or add an assist, it is not possession. That's why goalie gets an assist but making a save during a delayed penalty does not.
