So the question is, do we think Jarry is a good enough goalie to keep and realize he just had a bad playoff?

He's still an unknown, but my inclination is he's not. I don't know how Hextall goes into next season without a plan B. Since Hextall and Burke have decided to keep trying to win a cup, they will need something other than the current tandem we have.

Happy 4th to my fellow "Mericans" out there!

He has been a pretty good goalie, I feel like he has skill, but he has a complete lack of focus and isn't all that big in net.

It felt like he gave up in the playoffs. He isnt a prospect anymore. Probably a good option for a team like Buffalo who needs someone who can take the starter role and play good regular season hockey for them.

I think you'll get very mixed answers on this. My personal opinion is that while he's not a young goalie, he's early in the NHL development process, so for all we know he could learn from this season and improve, or he is what he is. I just don't know that the Pens have time wait and find out if he might improve.

This is pretty close to where I lean. Jarry might well be fine next year. But if the Pens really can't afford to wait until next playoffs to find out. And it will hang over the team all year if he comes back as the unquestioned starter.

So, hang on to him and if the deadline comes and he's doing amazing, then what? That's probably the best thing to happen right?
If not, grab a tender at the deadline?

This is a tough one. We gave MAF countless opportunities after a bad playoff and i know your #1 franchie goalie is different than Jarry... but the point stands. Jarry dropped the ball. There is no doubt about that. But do I think Jarry just forgot how to play goalie or no longer has the skill that he has shown at times? I dont. I dont think you just give up on him or trade him for nothing.

However, a Plan B is a must. People forget how close we were to losing to the Islanders in the first round in 2013 after MAF sucked. Had it not been for Vokoun, the Penguins would've been the national laughingstock getting embarrassed in 2012 and then the "Dream Team" getting smoked in round 1 for the 3rd year in a row. The only good thing is it might have gotten Bylsma canned a year earlier... but that's beside the point. If the Peguins had a Vokoun type in 2021... I truly believe there is a decent chance we are about to beat Montreal for the Cup.

So for next year, they need someone they can turn to. They also need to add a 3rd goalie at the deadline. We saw firsthand how what seemed like a meaningless injury for DeSmith turned into the Penguins demise. Investing in a 3rd goalie at the deadline should cost a late round pick. That investment is well worth it IMO.

The problem is that we just have no way of knowing. At this point I'd lean towards no since he's vacillated between pretty but not that good and actively awful since his all star appearance, but that's still a small sample size. He could be fine since goalies go back and forth so much, but I think it's too big of a gamble to justify going into next season with him penciled as the #1.
