Yea 2013 we should have won. Don't forget Jokinen and Vokoun. All those guys were added to Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Dupuis, Letang, Orpik, Martin, Niskanen, Fleury and I guess you throw Sutter in there haha. - 668710
That was a Cup team for sure. People always wonder how much impact a coach really has because he's not on the ice. This was "Exhibit A" for dumping an awful coach before he kneecaps your team. Bylsma fell into a perfect situation to get the first one then crippled them after that.
Should have fired him after the Philly debacle. Would have loved to see them hire someone competent after that season. Might have another cup. |

Bjugs re-signed with Wild for 900k haha...made 4.1 mill per year on his last contract.
Think we're going to see a lot of short termed bargains again this offseason? I do. |

I'm not sure I'd consider that a bargain. I think his value has just come back down to earth. 17 points last season, so I'd say 900K is commensurate with what he brings.

Not that I disagree with what you just said but we really wont know if its a bargain or not until this next season is over...but based on the rest of his career it kind of is....kind of...just about a .5 ppg even though riddled with injuries |

If he didn't miss half the season every year, I'd call it a bargain on a good bottom 6 player that can slot up and give you solid hockey. But When you're talking about someone in their late 20s that is a shoe in to miss 30+ games every year and isn't anything special on the ice, that's not someone I'd personally be interested in giving any more than the vet min to. |

Yeah, I honestly have no clue who she is, but it seems like they at least have someone with some expertise.
I’m more curious how many teams, if any, are successful as a result of using analytics to construct their team. - Rinosaur
2002 Oakland Athletics.
They won with pitching, not necessarily analytics. Analytics was used more around the hitting aspect of the game.
So the question becomes, what is your definition of success, and to what degree is analytics being used.

Fair enough. Even at vet min I wouldnt want him back but I do think he has the potential to make that 900k a bargain...if he doesn't miss that 30+ games, that is. Big if.

Analytics are extremely normalized and widely used by baseball FO staffs. You can confidently say that athletics played a role in pretty much every team's success for quite some time now.
But that's baseball and this is hockey. They sheer pace of baseball lends itself really well to a robust use of analytics, where as in hockey these metrics are difficult to track and subject to a degree of human error since its not always clear what on-ice actions constitute the specific event you're trying to track. Hockey analytics are probably somewhere between basketball and football in terms of usefulness and way at the bottom of the barrel of all the major sports in terms of how respected they are by actual decision makers. |

I think we're going to see lower salaries with more term going forward.

Yeah I agree for some of the more prominent pieces, kind of like RNH in Edmonton, but I think we still see a lot of bargain short terms because the players know that things are getting back to normal and the cap will rise again.

Teams with analytics departments make decisions that clearly didn't take analytics into consideration, so what I'm really trying to ascertain is which teams factor them in heavily to the decisions they make and based on that, how much success did it bring them.
I personally think fans take analytics more seriously than teams do, at least at the moment. |

Your last point is 100% true. I think most teams treat their analytic departments as a novelty or something they need to have because that’s just what people do now. |

Impossible to know this for sure unless we knew exactly what the analytic departments are suggesting to the GM's and then evaluating the moves based on that. Like you said though, it seems a lot of teams aren't doing things strictly from a pro-analytics view and we are certainly no strangers to that hahah |

Also to your point earlier, I think the pace of Baseball lends itself more to these analytics.
Personally, I think we're still a few years away before advanced analytics in hockey get more refined. Obviously plenty of us argue on here regarding how useful they are and which ones are more legitimate than others.
Some people here jump straight to analytics as the whole explanation, some use it as part of it as a piece to the puzzle and some shun them all together.
I think they're still too young and too objective to be fully utilized.

I think hockey has too many constantly changing variables to truly make them as accurate as they are in other sports. |

I think you mean subjective, but generally agree with your point even as someone that leans harder into analytics than traditional evaluation. Like I said, hockey analytics aren't just behind other major sports in normalization, they're also limited in scope compared to baseball and to a much less but still significant degree basketball. But that said, for a raw as hockey analytics are, hockey is so fluid and chaotic that the traditional forms of talent evaluation are just way, way too subjective to be useful without any degree of analytical backing. |

At best the analytic department can suggest a certain player or players. Then the scouting department takes over. They watch films of the individual and/or live action and make their recommendation to the GM. I highly doubt it is the other way around.
That's just my opinion, I have no experience with any professional sports organization. Nor do I pretend to. I do have experience as a supervisor. Judging people and their work performance is a part of the job. My final decision on any employee will be based on what I see. Production numbers can be manipulated.
