Here's my issue with Joe Thornton and Seguin as the Eichel comparables: age, contract status and "issues".
Joe was a pending UFA in 2 seasons. He was also 2 years older than Jack is now. That changes value pretty substantially as Jack is younger and under contract for longer at a decent price for his caliber.
Seguin just had a horrible playoffs for the Bruins and was reportedly out to the 3am partying most nights, including game days. Apparently it got so bad they had to station a guard outside his room in the hotel to ensure he didn't go out. Jack does not have these concerns.
Jack's concern is his health. The reason that's a lesser "strike" against Jack's value than the difference in Joe's age/contract or Seguin's boozing is that the team acquiring Jack, as has been discussed, would evaluate him prior to the deal being made official. If they aren't satisfied, it simply doesn't happen. For those reasons, I'd argue, Jack is more valuable now than either was at the time of their trades.
End of rant. |

Don't get too excited... I have no idea why Ventura has some kind of good reputation but I have never heard anything about him being involved in any successful decision making. You are right though, he is Karmanos guy. Just make sure you guys don't analytics yourselves into the Coyotes. - MacPatty
He's gotten a lot of hype from Pittsburgh and national media.

Like I said. The only reasonable comparables are those two. And they're not even that great because each had their own set of circumstances. So, like I said. There really isn't a benchmark available. Which could benefit the Sabres.

No argument at all. Literally the sample size should dictate caution when trying to predict Jack's return here.

Close age, still not franchise centers. The talent level in that trade was pretty on par though.

Let's run down the variables:
-24 year old franchise center. How many have been traded at this stage of his career in the salary cap era? Joe Thornton and Tyler Seguin. That Seguin trade was an utter disaster, and the Thornton trade was not far behind. You really don't have much of a benchmark to work with. The Sabres know the kind of assets they want, which is huge, while also narrowing down potential suitors. Only so many have a strong enough prospect pool to overcome the cost of aquisition.
-Neck injury comes with risk, compounded by the fact that Eichel and his agent are demanding a procedure that's never been performed on an NHL player.
-10M cap hit to a team where the opposing team is unable to likely return that 10M.
-Teams are going to have to give up an extraordinary amount of skill for what is an insanely talented 1C with a large risk for 5 years.
-Adams likely asking EC teams more than an acceptable amount to turn them off from trading for Jack.
-The expansion draft and all the variables with that. Sending Jack to someone may prevent that team from protecting someone they need to protect. Especially in a trade like this, where one non exempt player is leaving Buffalo, while it is likely accepting waiver exempt players, perhaps a cap dump, whether that player is worth protecting or not.
This is anything but simple. For all we know, a deal can certainly be agreed to in principal, but the medical questions could need to be answered. Just because nothing is done yet does not mean what so ever that something won't be done.
In the case of Sam? He has 3 weeks. Once a deal is agreed upon in principal, Sam's agent can negotiate a contract with the opposing team. - TheSabresTaco
