Eliotte Friedman said it best last night after the game. The league could have fixed this nearly a decade ago. They didn't. The rule was there, and so was the precedent.
Any complaining about what Tampa did is jealousy, nothing more. - buffalofan19
People have been female doging about the NHL salary cap loop hole for years.
Teams acquiring guys they know are not going to play and just stashing them on IR.
Magical injuries where guys just no longer play.
It has nothing to do with jealousy. Its only louder now because a team won the cup and players made comments about it. |

They pushed it so far that it was embarrassing to the league. If they don't have the desire to enforce the current rules, they need to reassess.

I think the devil's trade is fair
I don't think it would happen but is fair
I also don't know if there is that much of an upside from powers over Hughes, powers may have the tools but he may not he as effective...... better defensively but Hughes may be better than his brother in Vancouver
I know people have brought up risto and the devil's here too but I have seen nothing from the devil's side that say that they are targeting him and with the devil's analytical team they would probably stay away from him

Thats not the point... Its a ridiculous part of the system that needs to changed. Good on Tampa for exposing it. Now its the leagues job to fix said loophole.

If/when Trade Eichel need to get picks in next years draft
GMTM wasted all those precious 2015 picks and look at that draft. Next year supposedly much better that this supposed mediocre draft
Also draft Luke Hughes. Kid looks way better than the other prospects and a year younger… If he has a chance to be similar let alone possibly better than Quinn you grab him!!
That skating reminds me of Housley. |

That's why I would love a trade down scenario. If they could turn #1oa into Hughes and a late 1st, that's a huge W |

The league will change the rule in game 6 or 7 during triple overtime and Buffalo will have to sit a defenseman for non staff infection reasons. This is the way. |

i thought i red something to that effect not too long ago...the rumored basis is that he's not willing to sign a long-term deal
edit:

"It’s believed [GM Bill Guerin] made lucrative contract offers of seven and eight years that would make Kaprizov the highest-paid player per year in franchise history. However, so far, it’s believed Kaprizov is seeking a short-term deal, something Guerin doesn’t want to entertain since Kaprizov could become an unrestricted free agent in 2024." |

If it were me, I wouldn't be angling for late firsts. While those assets can certainly be valuable, I'd rather just use 1OA to pull in a great young player around 20/21 years old. Those late firsts could take 2-3 years to land on the roster. I want the Zegras' of the world to start playing in the NHL this year for the Sabres. Develop this core of players. 2016 draft years+.
Per the value chart produced by the Athletic, Columbus holds 14.5 points in 1st round pick value, where Buffalo's 1OA is 17.7. I wouldn't do the 3 for 1 deal, but if it was my only avenue, I'd be demanding a young player in return as well. If the Sabres need to balance the trade, so be it, they have the assets to do so. We know the #1 and highly likely #5 will be getting NHL minutes, ideally over a long career. We don't know how 24 and 31 will turn out. Two gambles just to move down 4 spots? I don't see it as quality asset management.
Get young developing players who you already have 2-3 years of tape on post draft year. |

Makes sense. Smart kid. Probably wants to just get the RFA years out of the way so he can decide his future in a couple years.
Never know with Minnesota as well. One year they're top of the league the next they're mediocre.

Last night was NBC's last NHL game.
ESPN and Sportsnet are collaborating for both the Expansion Draft and NHL draft coverage. Interesting note, Chris Fowler requested to be part of the hockey coverage once College Football is over. |

Trading out of 1OA is just a bad idea in general.
Just take Power for god sakes and stop pretending you know better than anyone
I’ve seen a prospect ranking today that has Eklund 5th and Beniers 7th, with Brandt Clarke 1st.
You have control over who you can pick at 1. You don’t at 3 or 5 or 8. |

I think you could swap 1 and 2, fulfill expansion requirements, not lose Asplund/Tage/Bjork and still get Power.
Sabres need to maximize assets |

or get beniers...
it actually makes a lot of sense for buffalo if they feel power and beniers are equal and it makes sense for seattle as their franchise history will begin with the first overall selection in 2021 |
