I think you could swap 1 and 2, fulfill expansion requirements, not lose Asplund/Tage/Bjork and still get Power.
Sabres need to maximize assets - Hank Balling
Then I’m confused what the motivation for Seattle is?
It seems like unnecessary movement for all parties involved

I wouldn't be against this idea if I trusted the scouting staff they have in place, which is far from the case. - buffalofan19
Even the Lightning's 1st round pick record is pretty bad in the past decade.
If it were the Bills, I would say go for it. I trust the staff, and you're getting 3 contributors instead of 1. Where the fifth pick is probably worth almost as much as the first, as long as we're not talking QB. In hockey, this makes little sense to me.

or get beniers...
it actually makes a lot of sense for buffalo if they feel power and beniers are equal and it makes sense for seattle as their franchise history will begin with the first overall selection in 2021 - Michael Pachla
I’d be willing to bet with the smart FO they’ve put together that moving up one spot so they can showcase picking first is not worth any assets |

If Seattle is dead set on Beniers, it makes no sense for them to make that deal. They know Buffalo is high on Power. They'd be giving up assets just to get a guy they can get at #2. Sure, Kevyn Adams could try and play poker, but I would have a better chance of succeeding with my car mechanic representing me in a court case than Kevyn Adams winning a game of wits with any competent GM in the NHL.

I just don’t get why people want to start rebuild 2.0 being cute.
Just (frank)ing draft. When you trade Sam/Eichel, draft more.
Draft so much your head spins

1st overall pick in their first draft is a pretty big deal.
Guaranteed to get the guy they want |

Kinda seems like the LA/BUF pick swap when Myers and Teubert. Kraken ensure they grab Beniers and need to absorb 1 year of Eakin to do it. That's the motivation, although I don't think it's enough to entice them to take that garbage, when they figure it's a pretty safe bet that they'll get him anyways. And Power is a hell of a consolation prize if they don't.
Yeah I don't see the Kraken's motivation.

So any GM not named Breisbois, Yzerman, and Sakic ?
Bergevin would have been fired if it weren’t for pandemic divisional rescheduling bailing him out and he went to a cup final.
28 GM’s just sit there like monkey’s clanging symbols and get lucky once in a blue moon.
Lou won GM of the year for dealing Devon Toews for two second rounders just to keep Nick Leddy. It’s a low bar |

Draft 1. Trade Eichel to Anaheim for 3. Trade 3 for 5, 24, 31. Trade Reinhart to LA for 8.
Draft 1, 5, 8, 24, 31.
Head spin successful.
No I wouldn't take this course because of my above argument.

Not sure it is tbh. They’ve put an entire FO together of smart people who’d undoubtedly be against that sort of fluff over substance thinking
And that’s not a shot at you I’m sure other teams might think it’s worth it |

I'm not looking at it in terms of pick value. I'm looking at it in terms of infrastructure. I get the draft is a crapshoot outside the top 5 (or higher), but given that every decision this team makes has been the wrong one for the past decade, I need them to just play the odds. It's like filling out a March Madness bracket. Sure, it's never going to be perfect, but going chalk is almost always going to get you better results, especially when you most likely don't have a clue as to what you're doing.

Do you really see Seattle blinking of Adams suddenly tells them we're taking Beniers if we don't make this trade? I don't.

Vasi's record in series clinching games is unbelieveable....usually shutting out the other team as he did last night. |

Odds are the #1 pick will be very good. Just make the damn pick
Idc if he’s the 4th or 5th best player in 5 years
The odds are greater than the 3rd or 5th overall pick who historically could be a lot worse |

I know you're a big Power guy but he is not a true consensus pick. There are plenty of rankings that differ from Power at #1.
It's very possible that when all is said and done, a player taken at 3, 4 or 5 is the best player in the draft |

So you're entire thesis for trading down is hoping one or more teams fall in love with Power to the point they give up additional assets, with Buffalo taking whoever is left when they pick?
Why not just let Buffalo pick who they really like at 1, whether that be Power, Beniers, Hughes, or Eklund? They'd fully control who they pick. |

"Playing the odds" is acquiring players who are much less of a question mark than an 18 year old draft pick.

maybe...however, if they're locked in on one of power/beniers, then the price of a third-rounder and taking eakin isn't that big of a deal...especially when deals will be made up to and including expansion draft day...vegas picked up two extra 1st rounders, an extra second and three more picks later in the draft for 12 total...
that said, you're probably pretty spot on with that |

Depending on who they like, they can probably get him at 2, 3 or 4 while accumulating more good stuff.
If they like Power at 1, take him.
If they like someone else, they can truly maximize the pick by moving around the top-5 |
