Is Caleb Jones really that good? Is he going to be that good? I don't think he's currently better than Keith and the Oilers added a 3 ringed champion veteran experience presence to their locker room and blue line. Not getting all the major dissing of Edmonton on this one. Maybe the not signing Barrie again is a factor... But for me that trade isn't as bad as some are making it out to be if you look at it in a vacuum. - MattStrat
No but Keith is horrible. |

The press box is much nicer in Pittsburgh. He might even take a discounted discount for the added comfort level. |

He’s a poopbag. Imagine Sydney Crosby acting like this with the cup. Tampa’s just a poop place period. |

It just seems like terrible value. Jones is no world beater and I don't think Keith is completely cooked but Edmonton has limited cap space, limited assets and a lot of needs while Chicago needed to move Keith and had few options.
Now the Hawks have the cap space to sign the other Jones if they want. Just an example of losing a trade on the value side when you had all of the leverage. Not to mention, now Keith is taking a protection slot.

I don't really love it. Feels like rearranging deck chairs if that Bertuzzi trade is even in the realm of possibility. Assuming Dunn is legit, its a good move to make our blue line stronger, but our blue line isn't currently an on-ice problem. Finishing ability up front is our bigger non-goalie problem and I really don't think AA is the answer to that. - Victoro311
If we remove Ceci and Pettersson, I'd say our blue line is definitely looking scary. What's our second pair? |

No dude we have to get rid of Math, Petts, Ceci, Tanev. Then complain about a poopty blueline and a not good fourth line. |

Dom's model hates him. Really don't think the Oilers gave up anything really of consequence and really its more just that Keith the player isn't currently worth a 3rd round pick, and when you factor his 5.5 mil cap hit over the next two years the Oilers paid a 3rd and a whatever prospect to just throw away cap space. Classic Oilers. - Victoro311
Yeah I guess the cap hit is the worst of it because I do beleive the Oilers are a tiny bit better after this trade. Just a smidge. Oilers also received that Swedish forward kid Soderland who's at least made it to AHL so far, no gaurentee that 3rd pick the Hawks received ever gets that far or farther. Regardless, not much need of continuing to discuss this trade haha |

Wait, didn't he build the Red Wings great runs of Stanley Cups and playoff trips? - stevens87
Scotty Bowman played a huge role with that team

I was more so comparing that arm chair GM blue line to the one we had this past year. But yea I agree that if we decided to retool the bottom 4 to allocate more cap to the forwards we could run into issues. Or we could not. Something to see I guess, and running it back on the blue line is still an option so we don’t HAVE to make any moves if we don’t want to since their on ice play isn’t an issue. It just severely limits what we can do with the forwards. |

I don't remember if it was you I was speaking to about this a little while back, but looking at EDM's roster and cap situation, they were finally in a position where they could wisely build around McD and this was their first major move. I'm not shocked.

I had Keith on my Yahoo fantasy team a few times was following him a lot last season. Still takes a F load of shots and blocks a lot too. Also brings 3 cups experience, not to mention produces more than Caleb Jones. Again, I believe the Oilers are a tiny bit better with regards to Jones out/Keith in. |

Yeah we were discussing it after the Nuge extension. 1 step forward 2 steps back. Holland is the man. |

I had the pleasure of watching the poop show of Detroit vs Chicago 8 times this season and Keith is absolutely unnoticeable. He just isn’t good anymore. And it’s more like Jones and 5m in cap space for Keith. Also this all but guarantees Barrie is gone. I would much rather have Barrie than Keith. |

To Keith's credit, he really only started to slow down last season and he's 37 years old, so he played solid hockey well passed his prime, but he's cooked now. Holland should have at least made CHI retain 50%.
The truth is, the Oilers don't really need to make any major moves defensively. Yes, Barrie would have been a much better decision, but IMO they really need a couple of mid-level dmen who are solid in their own end. Their biggest weaknesses are their bottom-six and goaltending, not LD dmen which they have enough money tied up in already. Very JR. |

Read Barrie is going back to the Avs.
If Blueger goes to SEA, Malkin is out long term.....They will have some other holes at C to worry about. I dont think McCann is that great, and Carter while had a good time in Pitt, not optimistic he can replicate his success another year later at his age. |

Well, we can remove Rinne from the list of possible mistakes the Pens could have made this off-season. He has officially retired. |
