Myers and Schmidt both had significantly better years prior to joining the canucks. I have to think that shaw can only improve things, as they really can't get any worse. - Codes1087
People forget that he also worked with Clark. The better defensive structures out there are pretty much in unison with what the Goaltenders are doing positionally with things like angles and rebounds.

They employed an AHL career defenseman who recently retired and only had a short stint as an AHL assistant coach, to run the defense of an NHL team. Baumer was the wrong choice from day 1 and the fact that he is still in the NHL as a coach is wrong.

Some people are better at teaching/explaining etc. Ken Hitchcock can’t even skate…
I’m not saying Baumer is a great coach, I literally have no idea, but if they chose to retain him he must do something well.

Obviously Shea Weber won’t miss time only because of his thumb injury. He has some issues with a foot, ankle and a knee. So that’s why he won’t be protected for the expansion draft and you have to expect he’ll be out for a long period.
It was strange reading an article about Clarke possibly being the best Dman in the entire draft. If he drops to us it's a no brainer IMO. - golfingsince
Big if but you never know. We will get a good piece no matter what.

Even if he was a good communicator, I truly don't think he paid his dues and worked his way up to be an NHL coach. I think it also shows in how bad the defense has been since he has been employed by the Canucks. The canucks have had a bottom 5 defense in the league since.

That’s what Shaw was hired for essentially. I expect to see improvement but still much work to do building the D. Betting he has input for UFA D.

Likely, I mean even Gillis picked Hodgson and Horvat top 10. Hodgson without the back issues looks like a solid pick. Bourdon sure seemed like a great pick until his untimely death.
We're talking Ference territory for bad top 10 picks outside the JB regime which is largely dependent on JV and OJ. I'm not comparing to other players selected, just the players themselves. Even Bryan Allen played 700+ games.
Baumer could easily be gone in season. I honestly don’t know what he has done to stick around. - Nighthawk
It could be they are growing their own. Him being new to the coaching system he just needs to be shown the proper way. Instead of starting over they will show him his faults and fix them?

JV probably a FA pick being JB just arrived. OJ caught me off guard. All said JB dials in on good picks 1st round & usually a steal on some level. Depth wise looking ahead we’ll need good picks later on.

We'll see, I hope you're right.
I think it would be great if we had some kind of savant as a drafter but there's no evidence of that despite the narrative floating around.
We've drafted highly for the most part and it's been hit and miss.

Imo picks past the 1st round have found some good to very good pieces. Enough to satisfy me with some prospects picked lately that could be nhlers.
