makes perfect sense. it will be his only chance to get a long term contract and cash. his agent wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't advise him to test the market. doesn't mean he won't sign back in montreal but gives him some leverage.

depends what MTL's initial offer is, there could've been a deal made that's decent enough that Danault doesn't even have to test the market

people here have been arguing for years on what his value is. should they give him 4.5M? 5M 5.5M..... we'll finally know.

wouldn't be surprised to see him get 6M on the market.

if a team offers him 7+ I'll be baffled. but we've seen crazier things I guess

I like Danault. Sober observation: he had 4 playoff points and in 75 total games this year he had 28 points, 6 of which were goals. I'm aware of the other areas Danault excels in but you need to be smart with your cap space and teams tend to pay for scoring not checking. I'd like to keep Danault but it has to be at a price that makes sense

ideally it would be closer to 5, but it wouldn't be the most turrible deal if MB matched that

7M I doubt it (not enough offense), but 6x6 easily imo

That's all nice on paper but it's a little thin after Suzuki at centre if Danault is gone. Unless they think KK will have a big year and Evans is ready to play in that shutdown role. That's a lot of if. You just lost Weber and Tatar as well.

the issue could be term and not just money.

he's 28, a 7 year deal would bring him to 35, it can't be that much of an issue

For what he brings, 5 is more than fair, imo. i would say 5.5M because of his defensive abilities is ideal.

6M would be a regrettable contract for Danault. And I am huge fan of his game.

meh, you say you'd go 5.5, but 6 is "regrettable"? would be kinda silly to let him walk away for 500K imho

I think he will get it on the market. Not a lot of C out there right now.

maybe montreal is only offering 4 years. that's about a 15M difference. yes, it is that much of an issue.

again, it will be his only chance to cash in. he has to test the market.

its a hard cap. 500K here and there adds up to a another player.

you know how the market works. with the series he just had, pretty sure a team will offer him that kind of money. good for him.
now is he ready to take a little less to stay home? we'll know soon enough.

I agree they're losing pieces but that doesn't mean you overpay. I'm not saying kick Danault out by any means but if he wants to see his market value then he likely is looking for a contract larger than the returns you're likely going to get.

Before the playoffs people were joking about "good luck in FA Phil" and "he should fire that agent for turning down $5m a year". Playoffs are over, Habs need to have sober analysis.

yeah, perhaps you're right, I'm under the impression MTL wouldn't mind longer-term but maybe they're trying to keep him just long enough so that Suzuki and KK are 100% ready

sure, but right now Danault's absence would be a huge gap to fill for MB, and he already has a lot on his plate. that 500K would be worth it

7 years is a long time for a contract. GMs have to think about the back end of those contracts. or should. PD plays a lot of hard minutes against top QoC. my guess is that don't think he will age well.

pas de panique, Allen est pas encore parti, et j'ai l'impression qu'ils vont s'arranger pour le garder, ils savent comment il est important pour le succès de l'équipe

For poops and giggles, if Danault walks:

Getzlaf to play with Perry?
Statsny?
Bonino?
Cizikas?

Guess is:

Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Evans, Poehling. Not pretty on paper
