At this point who cares?
How many people can name NHL coaches let alone assistant NHL coaches?
I don't care who they hire, just make it the right guy for the job at the time.
Ellis has certainly helped Casey before a NHL player. It's usually those journeymen type players that make the best coaches - Stripes77

not sure why that's a problem...if they're blowing it up trading jack and sam, this year will be geared towards developing the youngins in an nhl setting, which is what ellis does anyway - Michael Pachla
Regardless, the most expensive guy does not really need to be the best guy for the situation. In most cases, it isn't.

This may sound silly and basic, but aren't assistant coaches essentially development coaches?

What in Davy Jones' locker did ye just bark at me, ye scurvy bilgerat? I'll have ye know I be the meanest cutthroat on the seven seas, and I've led numerous raids on fishing villages. I be trained in hit-and-run pillaging and be the deadliest with a pistol of all the captains on the high seas. Ye be nothing to me but another source o' swag. I'll have yer guts for garters and keel haul ye like never been done before, hear me true. You think ye can hide behind your newfangled computing device? Think twice on that, scallywag. As we parley I be contacting my secret network o' pirates across the sea and yer port is being tracked right now so ye better prepare for the typhoon, weevil. The kind o' monsoon that'll wipe ye off the map. You're sharkbait, fool. I can sail anywhere, in any waters, and can kill ye in o'er seven hundred ways, and that be just with me hook and fist. Not only do I be top o' the line with a cutlass, but I have an entire pirate fleet at my beck and call and I'll damned sure use it all to wipe yer arse off o' the world, ye dog. If only ye had had the foresight to know what devilish wrath your jibe was about to incur, ye might have belayed the comment. But ye couldn't, ye didn't, and now ye'll pay the ultimate toll, you buffoon. I'll poop fury all over ye and ye'll drown in the depths o' it. You're fish food now |

If that's who Donny wants, I'm on board. Was just hoping for a little more experience next to him. That's not to say they won't do a great job. |

Yes.
It was that Gabe would want $9-$10 on open market. Garth said we may have $10m open. |

Ellis and girardi have "tremendous hockey experience" said meatballs..."they were able to help me and help us convey our message to the players, excite the players, be part of it..."
the "meatballs-effect" of he and his staff on the team when he took over:
"the psyche was real damaged. we didn't believe, we didn't see how we could win, we felt vulnerable...we convinced ourselves we were vulnerable and we even saw our vulnerabilities...
"i wanted to challenge the psyche...i looked around the locker room, i watched these guys skate, they're incredible, they're fierce, they're physical specimens...the strongest and the weakest thing in your body is your mind and we need to acknowledge that...
"do we need to win to believe?...or can you believe before you win?...
"again, the belief system wasn't there and i challenged our guys...we don't need to win to believe, to manage our psyche...and they embraced that...
"it's easy for me to say that but what we had to do, and here is where i compliment the whole staff, lack of confidence and a damaged psyche [means] there's no vision...they don't see how they can win, how they can imprint the game with their skill-set, their talent individually or collectively...
"confidence, i guess, is a belief that you can do it but maybe not a vision and we needed to get to a real conviction that we could do this, a clear, a vision of how we were going to do it...
"and that's where i think the staff was incredible" |

It frightens me less if MFE is going back to player development.
Who's the lucky one that gets to coach a PP without Jack and Sam? That's what frightens me. - Powerslave
Really who is gonna give a shat what the PP does if jack and Sam are not here. I would expect nothing less then another 2-3 years of Top 5 picks.

Good stuff Pach.
It occurs to me that his comments support the claim that the organization had no vision for who they are and no (few) players had a self-identity on how they fit that overall vision.
Sounds like Meatballs-The Don saw this and set forth to change it.
Good on him. |
