I think contending teams will all be asking to have retained salary in all acquired trades, and non contending teams will be willing to retain. I think Seattle would be willing to take on dead space if they can utilize it to obtain more high draft picks much like Vegas did. They had 3 1st round picks in their first year I believe.

But other than Canucks, Buffalo and Detroit who are the “non-contending” teams? No moves have been made, everyone will be trying to make the playoffs.

Ottawa, Calgary, Columbus, Philly, jersey, Chicago, LA, Anaheim, SJ, Arizona are all teams I think would be willing to retain.

He’s all offence, all the time, not very responsible defensively, which is why Torts hated him.
- LeftCoaster

Thats why he hated Laine too 😆

I don’t see anything happening Canucks wise. No one wants the Canucks garbage. Jim Benning is going to have to wait out his mistakes.

Found a vid of Benning getting rid of our trash.

Had a prominent agent tell me he’s never seen this many players available for potential trades. With every team

I would think all but the leagues elite talent is available, which is easy to say, but to fit it into your salary structure is really difficult for 70% of the teams.

I can see Seattle being 3rd or 4th in the Pacific based on who I'm seeing available in the edraft. I honestly don't think the teams below them in the Pacific would be opposed to retaining salary if it meant obtaining good draft picks, especially if the player only had a year left. Contending teams need cap space more than anything right now.

I can’t imagine a world, where after losing hundreds of millions that the Arizona Coyotes eat salary to gain a 3rd round pick, especially given that they are desperately trying to divorce themselves from their captain.

Chicago just moved Keith’s $5.5m cap hit for a prospect and a conditional 3rd rounder (becomes a second).

LA just gave up a second and a third for Arvidsson full pull.

The Leddy deal so far is the only thing resembling what you’re talking about.

There will be a few, sure, but I don’t see the “majority” of deals being made as being salary retained types.

As usual, a lot of talk but not much actual movement. You've gotta be in a position to retain or give up assets to make things happen. Canucks are not in that position. They were last year with the addition of Schmidt for a 3rd as EP40 and QH were on their entry level deals, not the case this year, they're going to take up a large portion of Benning's available cap space.

Jim Benning is the car at an all-way stop telling other people to go when he has the right of way.

He has 3 hours to leverage unprotected players for cheap. For someone who claims to to be super aggressive in trades, he has been pretty quiet, albeit every team has been quiet as well.

If the deadline comes and goes, and there was nothing done, I think it will be a pretty big failure on his part, considering what he told the media and other GMs.
