Maybe they know Drouin can go and will be the pick.
We'll know on the 21st I guess. - deadpoulet
I’m not sure what the protection list will be but I guess with Charriot / Edmundson / Petry and Allen protected. It doesn’t leave much of good players protected. They might try Drouin but knowing he has problem and left hockey temporally would he be a good pick? Specially at 5m+ / year. They could always pick a guy like Lek for bottom lines. Else Price could be a good pickup but at 10.5m he’d take 1/8 of their salary cap knowing there might be Tarasenko / Voracek and other big contract available.
It means they get 48 hours to negotiate and come to terms or pick somebody else. I think. See Florida and Dreidger. I think. - Takemedrunkimhome
I don't think you get to pick somebody else. Dreidger would be their pick and that's it. If you gamble and lose, you lose an option. So you have to be sure the guy is coming.

This is a game of chess actually lol - MONSTERSofMETALZ
I think Lehkonen will be protected. There won't be much to pick from mtl. Unless they want one of Kulak, Byron or Cale Fleury.

But maybe I'm wrong.
I'm a chicken. - deadpoulet
I think they're allowed to negotiate prior to the draft so I think if no agreement they can pick somebody else. Agaon maybe I'm wrong. Too lazy to look it up
I had said I saw next to no chance of Landeskog leaving Colorado but he's also not on their protection list - Takemedrunkimhome
I don’t know for sure, but you’d think a bunch of these “free agents” will be resigning immediately after the expansion draft. Just allows them to protect an extra player. Hard to think ovechkin is actually gonna hit the market too.

and in typical nhl fashion, instead of releasing a master list of protected players, they'll just let the lists slowly drip out on Twitter through beat writers
