I kind of feel the same way, I think those last playoffs were as good as it's gonna get for Price with the Habs, which would explain why he waived his NMC for the expansion draft. Because it's not a wild take to assume this roster will not be able to run it back all the way to the SC finals, hell they always seem to get to the playoffs through the backdoor these last few years, when they don't miss them by a smidgeon. On top of all the uncertainties around the roster when free agency hit: Danault probably gone trying to chase the bag somewhere else, Weber being a huge ??? on a potential return, coupled with the complete inability of the club to attract any elite free agents for decades now to improve the team, lets say I would not want to be in Bergevin shoes right now.
Deep down, I knew the Carey Price era would slowly come to an end when the team decided to trade his best friend Subban instead of trying to build the team around PK abilities and personnality. The suits in charge once again yielded to this mentality of outdated, old man country club that focus more on the team past achievements and the white, correct way of playing hockey rather than to build a contender team for years to come in today salary cap era.
Because that's what the good old Canadiens are, always about trying to win every season no matter what, patching up holes as they go instead of tearing it all down properly and rebuilding around high lottery picks like Chicago, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Washington succesfully did before. On this last part, fans and the media are mostly to blame for putting such pressure on the front office because they can't seem to grasp that you need to finish at the bottom for SEVERAL years in order to maximize your chances at drafting superstars that will carry you through the regular season and give you a chance to win it all. But every time I bring that up to friends or coworkers of mine, they always tell me stuff like 'Oh, it would never work in Montreal, people would boycott the games and cancel season tickets' and such. How can you say you are a fan of the team when you only support it through the good times, it's easy to be loyal to the club when loyalty is easy. - AK27

if I'm SEA I go with Vanecek (WASH), Kahkonen (MINN) and Jones (SJ) - fidopro
I hope so. I want to hear Bergevin say at the preseason press conference that the plan is to make the playoffs then anything can happen, for nine more years. |

FWIW, for those pondering the idea of Seattle selecting Price only to trade him back to Montréal, the Habs throwing picks/assets at Seattle for the Kraken to retain salary, etc: the NHL has informed both clubs that is a total no-go. League considers that a clear circumvention. |

this doesn't put anything to rest, he could still be staying or leaving despite the league considering this as circumvention.

Staying where or leaving where, the League has made it pretty clear, to me at least.
If he stays in Mtl this conversation is a nonstarter. |

Well TSN is saying it’s a knee surgery so who knows. Seattle isn’t taking him regardless. |
