You can't simultaneously argue that Price is right for Montreal with the current makeup of their team and wrong for Seattle when they have an opportunity to take Price and ice a lineup equal to or better than what Montreal has - TheGame316
Nobody is arguing that. Its either status quo with an option to use Weber's cap hit to replace him or rebuild if Price is gone. |

Whatever happens Wednesday, I'm 97% sure Price has played his last game as a Habs. The best-case scenario is it's part of a deal and we get something in return or Bergevin has another deal in waiting to spend that cap hit with a star player. I understand Seattle might already have their eyes on other goaltenders but they would be crazy not to take Price. Even with his bad contract, he is worth every penny when it counts in the playoffs and he's a marketable star. They could always take an extra goaltender as a bargain piece for some picks. - bakunin
I kind of feel the same way, I think those last playoffs were as good as it's gonna get for Price with the Habs, which would explain why he waived his NMC for the expansion draft. Because it's not a wild take to assume this roster will not be able to run it back all the way to the SC finals, hell they always seem to get to the playoffs through the backdoor these last few years, when they don't miss them by a smidgeon. On top of all the uncertainties around the roster when free agency hit: Danault probably gone trying to chase the bag somewhere else, Weber being a huge ??? on a potential return, coupled with the complete inability of the club to attract any elite free agents for decades now to improve the team, lets say I would not want to be in Bergevin shoes right now.
Deep down, I knew the Carey Price era would slowly come to an end when the team decided to trade his best friend Subban instead of trying to build the team around PK abilities and personnality. The suits in charge once again yielded to this mentality of outdated, old man country club that focus more on the team past achievements and the white, correct way of playing hockey rather than to build a contender team for years to come in today salary cap era.
Because that's what the good old Canadiens are, always about trying to win every season no matter what, patching up holes as they go instead of tearing it all down properly and rebuilding around high lottery picks like Chicago, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Washington succesfully did before. On this last part, fans and the media are mostly to blame for putting such pressure on the front office because they can't seem to grasp that you need to finish at the bottom for SEVERAL years in order to maximize your chances at drafting superstars that will carry you through the regular season and give you a chance to win it all. But every time I bring that up to friends or coworkers of mine, they always tell me stuff like 'Oh, it would never work in Montreal, people would boycott the games and cancel season tickets' and such. How can you say you are a fan of the team when you only support it through the good times, it's easy to be loyal to the club when loyalty is easy.

Say Weber, Price, Danault, Tatar, Drouin, Perry, Staal, Armia, Gus and Merrill are gone and here is our lineup next season with additions
Toffoli Suzuki Caufield
Hyman Stastny Gallagher
Poehling KK Anderson
Lekhonen Evans Byron
Chiarot Hamilton
Edmundson Petry
Romanov Fleury
Rask
Allen
Pretty competitive lineup if you ask me. Also gives enough time for Primeau to get a couple more years in Laval. Our defense and forward group are better and also good in net - habs88888
Wonderful if it happens, but there's no way we sign all of those players and even if we sign some of them it'll probably be bad contracts.

yeah, making the playoffs in the first year of their existence would be absolutely devastating for the franchise. - Pat1993
You know they have no prospects and no farm system, right?
Should they be trading future picks at the deadline to scrape in as the 7/8 seed just to say they "made the playoffs"? If they are close there will be tremendous fan pressure to "go for it"
If they don't have a realistic chance, they can justify trading any pending UFA's and stocking up the cupboards with prospects and picks and have open capspace in the summer of 2022 to really shape their roster
squeaking into the playoffs every year just sets you up for perpetual mediocrity

Even if we don’t sign Hamilton and get Larsson it won’t that bad |

Let's say I'd be surprised if MTL even thought about Rask. I don't think Price would have waived for any other team unless it was a slam dunk contender. Seattle fits a lot of his checks |

I think you're strongly downplaying the positive aspects of making the playoffs. of course accumulating picks is the silver lining if they lose, but playoff experience can also help build cohesion and develop a winning mentality and leadership. never a bad thing imho. |

I mean if Price was gone and Rask wanted to play in Montreal I wouldn't say no to one of the few goalies up there with Price. I'd tell people like Lucic and Marchand to (frank) off though. |
