A couple of days ago this strategy was INSANE. Almost as INSANE as NYR getting Goodrow for merely a 7th.
Most people saw this coming. There is no conspiracy. Price is extremely overpaid. Sure he just had a god-like run, but have you watched him much over the last few years? He's about to turn 34 and this contract won't look good at age 37,38,39. Bergevin knows this. So does Price.
This is a win-win for all parties. If Seattle takes Price, then the fans applaud his sacrifice for the franchise. Allen stays. Bergevin finds a cheaper goalie and they enjoy the extra cap space. Maybe Bergevin takes a bit of heat, but in the end it would be viewed as genius. If Seattle takes another player, the fans applaud Price as a hero for taking a risk for the franchise. Bergevin also is applauded for his bold strategy that worked.
The only people falling for this are a number of media members and fans that don't understand how crippling it is to have a $10.5M goalie who is deteriorating.
But we'll know in 10 more days what Ronnee Frances has planned.

I would also say that if you are going to state a conspiracy theory, one of the most interesting ones is for Seattle to select Price. They eat 50% of his salary and trade him back to Montreal. Habs free up $5.25M in cap space. Ronnee Frances probably nets a basket of goodies for his services. I doubt it happens. But when I saw the headline this is what I expected to see. |

I love Carey Price he is a great person. I think maybe he is ready to Move on from Montreal so he made this play. If I was Francis I would grab him. |

I believe there's a clause that a player selected by the expansion team cannot trade him back for one full season. This was done by a number of teams in the early-90s expansion, and I think the NHL put a rule in place. |

There’s some good players available to pick from. It’s conceivable that their roster could be better then the Habs next season. |
|

If I’m Francis, the decision is based on what is going on with Drouin and if it is felt that he can come back next year. If Drouin is likely good to go, he’s an excellent choice to excel in a low pressure environment. If not, MTL hasn’t exposed anyone else too exciting, so Price is the guy. |

I don't think its an explicit clause, but I did just read that the NHL proactively stepped in to address this particular rumour and warned that Seattle retaining salary and trading Price back to Montreal would be viewed as cap circumvention. Could involve a 3rd team, but I suspect that would be shot down too. So does Ronnee Frances want 13% of his cap towards a 34-year old goalie on the decline? This is insane!! |

This X1000. Pretty sure Price is the only goalie with a cap over 10 Million to ever make the conference finals/cup. Price was really solid first 3 rounds this year but anyone thinking Seattle wants to take that on when you could get Quick, Bishop, or any of the other younger guys is just buying what Bergevin is trying to sell. |

I believe it's a stupid idea, why eat 5.25 mill of that salary? Does Montreal have a player to trade back that is worth 5.25 mill for the next 5 seasons?
Oh and add on that players salary that the Habs are sending back. |

No, the worst decision ever made by them was Mario Tremblay leaving Roy in net for 9 goals.
Then there was the Sergachev for Drouin trade. And the McDonagh/Higgins for Gomez trade. And the Turgeon for Corson trade. And the Chelios for Savard trade. Those are the ones that come to mind.
This measures about a 3 on 1-10 bad decision scale. - jmatchett383

People are looking at this totally wrong--- most people say the only reason Montreal made it as far as they did was because of Price----- we are looking at it wrong--- it should be Montreal almost MISSED THE PLAYOFFS because of Price--- between injuries and his God awful stats--he was a trainwreck.
As a fan who bleeds red, white and blue-- I would drive him to Seattle if they picked him-- PLEASE PLEASE take him, only fans who think with their heart and not their brain would disagree with me.
For heavens sake-- if we lost in the first round this would not even be an issue---MY LORD |

LeBrun already tweeted out that that scenario is not going to be allowed by the league. |

So Ek, We are supposed to take your "rumors" seriously, and you can't even spell the last name of Seattle's GM right, who happens to also be in the Hall of Fame?
Come on man, at least try. Back in the day you at least put some effort into this stuff |

Frances the Francophone. Talk out there of Price needing hip surgery and he'll be out to lord knows when. He was to see a doctor. Too early to tell. At any rate there is the good and the bad to Seattle taking Price. An aging banged up goalie although still world caliber still can't guarantee he'll make it to the end of his contract. Ask Shea Weber. If Price wants Seattle to be close to home I have no issues with that.

I'm pretty sure he would just fly there.
Goalie equipment takes up a lot of room. |

At 34 is Price really the door stop that an expansion team needs? Francis won’t touch this guy.
Brilliant move by Montreal, they just saved someone from the unprotected list.
This team will not be the Vegas Knights in their first season. |
