Best goal scorer in the draft...some of you will never be happy
RW right shot - flashfire
NHL.com analysis: Coronato is a dominant offensive force who blends top-end goal-scoring, strong skating and a physical approach, similar to United States Hockey Hall of Fame forward John LeClair. He was nicknamed Bison because of the way he goes hard to the net in the offensive zone.
Sounds like the kid is a bulldog who can score... not much to dislike about that. |

Thanks John. What's your take on the pic?
Why would they draft another guy that is going to Harvard? Worse than Russians. - DuranDuran
I actually added a brief personal take to the post this morning. I will put together a more extensive take early on in the upcoming week. Thank you for reading! |

Well day 2 starting in about an hour, a couple of pretty skilled forwards fell out of the first but barring surprises should be gone in the first 10 picks.
One guy I would like to grab is Scott morrow. We have no RHD in the system and tanev isn’t getting any younger, he’s put up some pretty good numbers for a D at the high school level and is bound for Umass next year. |

Ugh, had 2 thirds we could have used to try to get back up in the 2nd round to get Raty... really feel like the Flames missed the boat on this kid.

Frustrating watching all these moves and not hearing about the Flames. But, the day is still young.

Yeah, the costs for moving around in the 2nd have been so affordable too... Dunno what Tre has up his sleeve, but as far as "shaking up this core" all he's done is let Gio walk (which was the right call given who else we had to protect).

A left winger from.... Sweden! and Coronato played in the USHL like Gaudreau...
I called them drafting another Swede, though I forgot about the USHL, which is another tendency for the Flames.. they could still get a player from Western Canada to round things out.. I wonder how well we scout the QMJHL and OHL.. |

Maybe the idea is to stay put, see if Sutter can bring out their best. If that does not work, go for 1st round picks in next year's draft. That might be the best long-term option.
I would have liked Reinhart but next year's first is extremely valuable.

I hope that he turns out that good. That was some pretty good drafting by the Flames.
Shouldn't you be polishing Smitty's balls? |

Nurse is going to be the next Seth Jones. At least you have Kieth.

Alright John let's have a breakdown on all these picks.
How's everyone else feeling? |

Flames still need a defenceman, lots of interest in Savard out there. He's come out and said he doesn't mind playing in Canada, so he's probably going to get overpaid. What everyone's feelings on Tony DeAngelo?

TD has made several mistakes... by all accounts he's a crappy team mate so for me not with a 10 foot pole!!!!!!
As far as our picks go... I know very little about any of them so I gotta trust that our scouts did. Definitely added some size to the prospect pool so hopefully there is speed and skill in there too. |

I think the flames go after Alec Martinez |

We'll be fine, the fact he could get #1RW relatively easy, reduces that risk on its own. Plus, as of now, he could play with Gaudreau/Tkachuk at LW, and Lindholm/Monahan/Backlund at C. Pretty good situation for him to succeed. There's no reason to think he's got attitude problems, and he was vetted through team interviews.

While I’m less familiar with this draft than most I would probably give us a B grade. I do believe Lucius was pretty interchangeable with coranato and he’s going to make a lot of teams look dumb for pass on him, stromgren also looks like a solid pick but there was a couple better names available. The reports that came out against our 3rd and later picks are pretty encouraging and if we can get 1 NHLer out of them we should be happy.
My main knock on our draft is that I feel we dropped the ball on getting a RHD. The only ones we have in the system right now are kinvall and yelesin, neither of which have a ton of progression left in their careers. With tanev having 3 years left on his deal and it not making much sense to sign an expensive UFA to play 3RD this is going to be a big issue for us down the road, not to mention tanev isn’t getting any younger.
Overall I feel like we had a pretty decent draft but I’m going to keep my expectations low as this draft class is supposed to be a bit weaker. |

Everything I've heard about DeAngelo sounds like it was blown way, way out of proportion. It seems like the biggest problem was he clashed with the Russians, and the Rangers were always going to back the Russians.
He knows what he's signing up for playing for Sutter. If he's open to coming to Calgary, they should be all over that.

I gotta think he's itching for a second chance and will be on his best behaviour. The guy is talented and I agree Sutter won't let him be a distraction. |

Savard was on the list of five worst d men the last 5 years with Jack Johnson and Keith, he wasn't as bad as them, but being on that list as 5 worst defensively is disconcerting. I wouldn't mind TD as long as he is not a total deuch and doesn't mess up the lockeroom. He has decent offensive numbers, I have no idea how he is defensively. 1.5 a year wouldn't be too bad if he could fill RD3 effectively. Leaves room to sign or trade for a LD1 or 2, and a top six center or rw, or both and the backup G. Fill out remaining bottom six with a couple Stockton guys, Kylington will be 6/7 D resign Stone for 7/8 D or reverse those 2.
As for the picks, I think they did decent for the kind of year it was, I don't usually follow the kids till they are part of the organization so we'll see how they do in the next couple years in their respective leagues. |
