Extremely good chance this is worse than the Seabrook contract almost immediately.

Not to people who keep saying Seth Jones & elite in the same sentence ...

Carolina didn't have a first round pick, but got more seconds? Didn't like any of the players available or is something else in the works?

Not trying to cut Stan any slack, but how do we know that Nolan Allan would not have been projected to be drafted higher under normal conditions, these last two seasons have not been normal. I have a feeling that they know a little bit more than most of us here, time will tell.

Like, you have to REALLY hope he returns to form because he hasn't played like an elite defender for several years now, and last year he was just flat out bad.

I dunno. Who was Stan negotiating against that drove the price up like this? Himself?

I guess they think the guys available at 40 and 44 are as good as the guy they could have got at 27. It's a really weird draft year so the more shots the better I guess.

Yeah I can't really fault any draft picks this year (except the Mailloux thing because WHAT THE (frank).) because we really don't know as much about these guys as we'd like. Most of them haven't played much this year.

Agree. No ledge for me either. I'm disappointed they didn't pick a lane and stay in it in terms of rebuilding.

Like Ogi said, I don't like giving up the 2022 1st and even this year's first.

That said, while Boqvist looked to be getting better, I wasn't sold he was ever going to be a top pairing dman and like Shaw, I worry about his staying power.

A number of people had mentioned if he didn't learn how to take or avoid hits he was going to have a short NHL career. I think he's already had a couple concussions with the Hawks or at least been in protocol a few times.

While most people agree Bowman lost another trade, I do believe this may be the first time he's made a "big boy" deal and gotten the best player in it.

Trying to look on the bright side and in that respect, they kept Mitchell and Beaudin who are like Boqvist under 6' (smurfs though thankfully not you know what) puck movers. Didn't have to give up Dach, Dinky, Reichel or Kurashev.

Still have a lot of young guys so still a lot to be excited about and I'm hoping Jones brings some stability to the back end.

I'm also on board with what others have mentioned in terms of maybe Stan can recoup some picks by offloading Z or Strome. Just so GP knows, I'm not thinking they will bring back first rounders because that's apparently what I think all Hawk players are worth...though they should be able to get one of those for Carpenter, no? (RF)

- HawkintheD

The Hawks have had a knack of unloading young d-men that never amounted to much.

Dylan Olsen
Shawn Lalonde
Ryan Stanton
Klas Dahlbeck
Adam Clendening (although he keeps hanging around the league)
Gustav Forsling ( Q seems to like him in Florida)

Maybe Boqvist breaks that trend. We will see.

This is the board that mocked the Roman Josi deal the day it was signed

Seth Jones can't carry Josi's jockstrap let alone equal his play on the ice.

Nolan Allan was slotted at 101-118 on a couple of mock draft boards

I wouldn’t be too concerned about where Nolan Allan was drafted until a few years down the road, remember where Datsyuk and Zetterberg as well as Duncan Keith were drafted.

As for Jones, all I can say is I hope playing for Torts negatively impacted his game and he’s able to rejuvenate it in Chicago or the residents of this board will be even more upset than with the Seabrook signing.

I think when Keith said he wanted out, Stan and his crew took an honest assessment of their D pipeline and decided that none of them project as a #1, and he doesn’t want them to struggle being overslotted as they developed. As far as the overpay, don’t think Jones would agree to come without the overpay.

I hope Stan got what he paid for, the fancy stats say no. But they say that is why you play the game.

As far as Stan, I would rather have a GM that does what he believes is needed, and not play it safe, and hide behind rebuilding as an excuse to not making deals. Of course it opens him up to criticism and endangers his future employment.

lol they just don't value goalies very highly. Hence rolling with Mrazek for the past few years.

End of the day I think they see this as a chance to start fresh and get some actual stability in net for a few years.

I think the point was Allen was guy that could have taken a 60 and used 32 for a different player.

And here we thought that there was a flat cap, could have fooled me with these contracts. I love Makar, but man, whatever happened to bridge deals?

At least Nolan Allan has some size and supposedly can skate. One scout described his game as 'new age necessary' because he cleans up mistakes by smaller D partners. He played well with Brandt Clarke on the U 18 team that walzed thru that tournament in Dallas earlier this year. He's a lottery ticket that might cash 4-5 years from now or may just never be heard from again.

The Jones acquisition and payment is pretty much indicative of a desperate GM who knows he has much work to do with his roster to have any chance at all of making the playoffs in the Central. No playoffs or a bad year and Stanbo and his hand picked coach are on the street looking for work and at that point not worried about the draft picks they gave up to get Jones.

I will judge Seth Jones by what I see on the ice in a Hawks jersey not by past performance charts. Those are for claiming race horses at Arlington Park.

And I have another reason to hope - as you know the great strategist John Tortorella somehow found a way to diminish the performances and reputations of more than just Seth Jones - P-L Dubois, Patrick Laine, Wennberg, William Karlsson, Max Domi, Sonny Milano, Ryan Murray and the list is actually longer.

I'm not as upset with the Jones deal as most. Yes, Stan overpaid in the deal and the extension but I don't think it cripples the franchise. It will likely hurt the team in years 6-8 of the new deal much like the last few years of Keith's deal did. Probably a bit more and without the 3 Stanley Cups. For the record, even at the same salary I would have signed Hamilton over acquiring Jones. Even at $9.5 million the Hawks could have got Hamilton for 4-6 years.

However, the Avs are paying top dollar for Makar's prime years and that's an investment work making 100% of the time. Great deal for Colorado.

Both of the last 2 seasons have been truncated by the pandemic. None of the young players have been through an entire 82 game season, and their development has been delayed.

IMO, ‘21-‘22 should have been about getting as many of the youngsters as many reps as possible, in order to determine exactly where they were at and what they’d likely become, while also selling off vets for more picks and prospects.

Unfortunately, Stan got impatient and jumped the gun. As many here have already said, this is the type of deal you make when you’re on the cusp, and adding 1 guy makes you a Stanley Cup contender.

I hope it works, but I don’t think it will.

Thanks Theo for the job you do!
While we all have our opinions on this trade, when does the leash break for Colliton and his staff? As we have all suffered through watching the poor play of this team, some questions come to mind:
1. When does the responsibility for continuing to use poor schematics get held accountable? Can't keep pounding a square peg into a round hole. Special teams are a joke, Defensive zone scheme sucks.....
2. If our head coach's strength is developing young players, who have we seen develop? Example: Hagel's energy and play are intrinsically motivated and are not Coach based.... Boqvist? Bye bye & don't let the door hit you in the a**! Strome has diminished....
3. AGAIN The Hawks Special Teams are a joke. Why is there no change?
4. Since Kampf's only value is at the dot, why isn't someone else being groomed for that role that has an offensive pulse?
Organizational talent and depth are wonderful and WE NEED MORE! Yet you cannot win continuing to go in the direction that this staff leads. As soon as the Hawks fire Collion & his NHL Staff, the better the on ice results will be and the sooner we will get back to competing for AND WINNING the Stanley Cup!
Please let me know your thoughts.

He was shown for the dman he is when Werenski was injured. He was slightly better with him as a partner. Before that, thrived in Nashville where there were good dmen all around him. He played top pairing minutes out of necessity in CBJ, not because he fills the role. People who don't like JC, or the system, how is this better for Jones or how will he thrive? The picks & contract just make it worse, granted Bowman went way off the board. Hopefully, he pans out. I've never been one for trading dmen, I wanted to draft & develop. To me, longer but more successful route.

Agree if hawks miss the playoffs and ate at the bottom of the league again clean house completely. New scouting except European new gm and assisant gm and get an actually hockey guy for a president of hockey operations. It did look desperate and how much pressure was coming from up top.
