There's two parts to this trade. A 6th or 7th is an asset agreed. (frank)ing another team for cap space can also be considered an asset. Hard to say which is worth more. Worth negotiating at the very least. - winsix
Oilers are in another conference. Cap hit reduction is fairly negligible.
I will die on this hill. |

400k is not a "big chunk of cap space".
You're also not factoring in the 8th year at 5M+ which would be insane for a player who is probably broken by the 4th year. - mjones242

400k AAV is not "a lot".
This is the year you throw as many darts as you can because of the relative uncertainty of the draft.
Plus, the 8th year is absurd and a massive boat anchor. |

Devon Levi + 2022 1st for Reinhart - Steven_Seagull
Not a terrible haul for Reinhart.
Sabres have done well so far collecting future pieces.... which they will horribly mismanage and poison. |

No, getting zero assets because you think 400k is worth more than a 6th or 7th is (frank)ing absurd. - mjones242
No, you disagreeing with me is absurd. Really, really absurd. Actually, it’s not since you do it all the time and it hurts my feelings. |

Getting a pick back would not be a favour.
That 8th year is the ultimate albatross. - mjones242
Predicting a player's future, or a draft pick's success is not an exact science. Hyman playing a regular shift on McDavid's line should do very well. Would not be shocked if he had a career year. Longevity is also a guess. The time to have moved Hyman if there was no intent to sign him was at the TDL or before. His injury and Leafs high hopes got in the way of that happening. Instead Leafs coughed up a 1st for Foligno a much lesser player that under performed big time.

Thing about Holland is he's an old dinosaur pre-cap GM. He had the fortune of having an unlimited budget to spend from. Mike Ilitch's fat wallet allowed him to spend whatever he wanted on whoever he wanted.
He was able to take advantage of teams who were dumping salary to tank. Robert Lang. Or teams who had no choice. Hasek. Or players who wanted out. Chelios. Or bargain deals. Larry Murphy. He was even fortunate enough to have UFA Marian Hossa call and tell him he'd take a paycut to sign with Detroit.
Essentially Holland became very spoiled. He's so used to acquiring players for futures that he can't fathom giving anything of value up. He tries to fleece other GM's instead of making trades which benefit both teams.
The key in dealing with Holland is to make him believe he's fleecing you. Like when Yzerman acquired a 1st round pick from him so he could get Kyle Quincey back. Holland loved that trade. Only Yzerman would later use this pick to draft Vasilevskiy.
Chayka took the Datsyuk zombie contract to swap picks with Kenny. Holland was grinning like a butchers dog because he actually believed he could use the cap space to sign UFA Stamkos. Stamkos never even talked to him. Chayka drafted Chychrun. Kenny drafted Cholowski. But after that trade was made Chayka was Kenny's best friend.
He likes GM's who kiss his ring because he's Hall of famer Kenny Holland. So it's clear that Dubie isn't bowing down to Kenny. Dubie isn't making Kenny believe that he's fleecing him. That's how Kenny's mind works. I watched this guy operate for over 2 decades. It's always the same. That's why he doesn't make impactful trades. He plays it safe. |

Even Dubas acknowledges that the way the Leafs are built has never been done before. - Steven_Seagull
Are you still a Boy Wonder fan? (serious question SS)
I was indifferent mostly but definitely not a fan of his soft/skill analytic BS.
I will absolutely have fu3king immense hate for him come September if he hasn't fixed this team. Not band-aid $1m contract fixes but a real attempt at some type of real trade. Just an attempt even if it failed.
Trading Rielly or Marner or pulling some magic out of his a$$ is all he can do to save face for me. I'm really starting to hate him and the team he's put together.
Never been this way before either, even with sh1t Leafs teams and GMs. For me, those other teams had nothing to work with, Dubas has had everything... AM/MM/JT/WN/MR/1st Rounders/great UFAs have been available during his tenure/and even the magnificient JHoll... to make the team better and still hasn't.
I don't think he's good at the job. He is terrible at unwinding a mistake...to stubborn or arrogant perhaps?!? |

Methinks Dubas has over-estimated this team's ability to go deep in the playoffs and his trades have seriously damaged the prospect pipeline as a result.
Cap hell with no prospects and never a sniff past the first round.

You take a kid like Zack Stringer, probably the most talented kid I've ever watched play AAA hockey. He gets every aspect of the game, his vision and scoring ability are insane, he's fast, hits like a truck.
He was a top 10 WHL pick, last year was projected in the first round.
Covid happened, the WHL was only playing 24 games this year. With all the pandemic poop he basically found it tough to want to play hockey, had a subpar year and dropped to 190th.
24 games, from 14th to 190th.
6th rounders matter in this draft, throw your darts. |

I agree with getting the asset in return. I just think if they really wanted Hyman, they would of pony up the draft pick a long time ago for his rights.
You gave him time to negotiate a new contract, to me that's worth something more than a 6th or 7th.
The Oils now have a 3rd rnd pck. Send the 4th over and they get more Hyman at a lower cost.

If this draft is such an unknown and you want to get as many darts as possible, why the hell do we care if it's a 3rd, 4th, etc?
Get your lotto tickets.
We've already seen teams go off the board and scouting reports are not lockstep.
So yes, quibbling over the Round you're getting in return seems rather absurd this year. 🤷 |
