So looking at cap friendly, here's my take on the 'core' as I keep reading about just a list of our best and/or youngest prospects as a 'core'.
Boeser
Hoglander
Pettersson
Podkolzin
Maybe/probably Richardinson, Garland
Ekman-Larsson
Schmidt
Rathbone
Hughes
Demko
Notably, I leave Bo and Miller off of this due to expiring contracts UFA. Miller will cash in I think, especially if he puts up points next couple years playing with Petey. Horvat will want to win ... and if we're not heading there I can see him walking if offered money and team primed to win.
This is just where I see the 'core' as JB has shaped it based on contracts and faith put in prospects. Again, really based on cap friendly and retainability (word?). I know Nate might not be considered core by most and maybe not by JB either, but with that contract I think he is until traded.
My point being, fairly underwhelming . Potential to be a middle of the pack team in my opinion.

They know how to run a franchise, how many top 3 picks have they had, canucks havn't had any since the Sedins. |

Flyers have now traded a 2021 1st, 2022 2nd, 2023 2nd, 2022 7th, Gostibehere, Myers, and Patrick to get Ellis and Ristolainen…

Holes filled contracts to get done & JB usually does well there.
Still see Schmidt on the move. Hughes could be RSD in my roster thinking unless more RHD to come. |

I strongly dislike 2 defenseman, until the get rid of at least one, I will not be as excited about this team as some others. |

I knowni said I'd troll but legit question.
Petey is talented enough for a 1c. Can his body hold up for 4 rounds of playoffs? All the chips are on him cause there is zero 1 c in vans future |

It's okay they won't be in a 4th round of the playoffs for a long long time.
Just being honest. |

Swap Bo and Boeser. The team will pay Bo to stick around. Boeser is more likely to be trade bait at some point or price himself out of town |

I think you could swap Myers and Schmidt as well. |

Just because there hasn’t been enough whining lately…
Jim Benning is basically a shifty contractor. You bought a perfect, waterfront lot, and hired Jim to build your dream house. His quote is 24 months and $400/sq ft. You agree and put up a significant deposit and he gets to work.
Four months in you start to realize he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. The drywallers keep showing up and the framing isn’t even finished yet. Nobody thought to hire a plumber, the marble showed up but the sizes are all wrong.
At the end of the day, it took 48 months, cost $650/sq ft and now that you’ve moved in and started to find all the small things that were done wrong, he won’t return your calls. |

Except the Canucks were a bog and there were many unknown sinkholes while trying to fix it all up and build the house. |

Schmidt for Gudas+? - Nighthawk
They absolutely have to get either a cheaper (younger) D back, preferably right side, or draft picks so that they can address D with UFA’s. |

101 points in a year that lots of teams tanked for McDavid and we had a terrible year before and after... yes it was a mirage. It was the worst season for us in decades because it made FA think we could still be a playoff team. If we sucked instead, we would have rebuilt properly. |

That being said, it’s still the hardest trophy in sports to win. Look at the disappointment in Colorado this year. I would have thought they’d get a lot closer. At the end of the day, close only counts in horseshoes and grenades - Shuswap Wap
That is the exact reason why you want a continuous flow of young talent into the lineup instead of trying to jumpstart a rebuild. I really don't care about 4th round picks unless somebody shows a reason to stick around. After all, there are only so many contracts.
You're going to hit on some picks so having others waiting in the wings to come up and compete is great. Unfortunately it seems we've decided that we have enough talent in the pipeline so we can halt that process for a couple of years.
I hope it works out, because we're creating the same type of gap that Benning tried to rectify when he first got here by handing away draft picks. Had he held onto those 2nds, we likely wouldn't be trading firsts now to fill those holes. |

Yeah, maybe. There was certainly a greater amount of false promise. I suggest the same is true of the bubble. Think they have finally turned the corner however. Hopefully the lessons of the past years will stick and they will avoid the same ones again. |

I don’t have a link, but I believe Benning did say something about having too many prospects and nowhere for them to play. It was his interview on SN650 after the trade. |
