I don’t have a link, but I believe Benning did say something about having too many prospects and nowhere for them to play. It was his interview on SN650 after the trade. - 1970vintage

That is the exact reason why you want a continuous flow of young talent into the lineup instead of trying to jumpstart a rebuild. I really don't care about 4th round picks unless somebody shows a reason to stick around. After all, there are only so many contracts.
You're going to hit on some picks so having others waiting in the wings to come up and compete is great. Unfortunately it seems we've decided that we have enough talent in the pipeline so we can halt that process for a couple of years.
I hope it works out, because we're creating the same type of gap that Benning tried to rectify when he first got here by handing away draft picks. Had he held onto those 2nds, we likely wouldn't be trading firsts now to fill those holes. - golfingsince
Tb, Pitt, LA, Chicago all mortgaged their future to win the cup. It was literally their 3rd and up round picks that have been really making them able to dance around the cap.
The type of rebuild that many of you want has not won any cups in over a decade. Oilers and Buffalo are the results of that. We have the core in place and half of them are hitting prime years. NOW is when we try to give them the edge to compete. We still need to add 2 pieces, I'm thinking Hamonic and try to get Montour or Savard. Futures for Schmidt and Holtby. |

Garland is 25, drafted in 2015. That was Benning's 2nd draft.
We traded away a bunch of pick/prospects over that time that could have become his equivalent or even him.
Whatever, I think this is the best team he's assembled since his first year here but the D is still quite suspect. My point remains, trading away picks to provide for now keeps kicking the can down the road. We'd better hope this team is competitive cuz if not the core keeps getting older and there's not much in the pipeline. |

There's a time to mortgage picks, we've been doing it since the rebuild began and now we have holes that we have to fill externally instead of internally. Had we held on to more picks in the early years we'd likely not have to trade 1sts now to fill those holes....we'd have guys progressing. |

Trade, UFA, Draft... it's all a crap shoot and you need all 3 to win. By the time Bo and Boeser start to age out, you have 8 drafts. 4 or 5 would realistically have their replacements. Petey and Hughes will still be competitive. There is time before the team becomes what Gillis left it. And we actually have a scouting staff that can find players in multiple rounds. |

Here's the Blackhawks winning roster in 2010 and how they got there. How many were acquired trading 1st and 2nd round picks?
https://www.nbcsports.com...stanley-cup-champion-team
We were a doormat team trading away picks to be more competitive, and now we're trading away more picks in order to be competitive. There's a snowball effect.
I hope to hell we have a contending team for the next 2 years cuz if we don't we've blown our load.....again. |

Just because there hasn’t been enough whining lately…
Jim Benning is basically a shifty contractor. You bought a perfect, waterfront lot, and hired Jim to build your dream house. His quote is 24 months and $400/sq ft. You agree and put up a significant deposit and he gets to work.
Four months in you start to realize he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. The drywallers keep showing up and the framing isn’t even finished yet. Nobody thought to hire a plumber, the marble showed up but the sizes are all wrong.
At the end of the day, it took 48 months, cost $650/sq ft and now that you’ve moved in and started to find all the small things that were done wrong, he won’t return your calls. - 1970vintage

For the record, I actually think we could have a decent team this year if everything goes well on D and we remain healthy. However, if it all falls apart then we have no choice but to change the GM.
His draft record isn't as great as we like to pretend it is, mostly because he's traded away so many picks. Then again, unless OJ and Podz step up this year it's just not really great to begin with. |

Agreed
I think JB selfishly (at the expense of the future/club as a whole) gave himself and the team a 2-3 year window to really compete. After that, with contracts and aging players, it's going to get more and more difficult to juggle things. |

If they can trade Schmidt for a decent RHD and a bit of cap space they’ll be set up pretty good, as long as the major guys stay healthy. |

It really hinges on OEL IMO. If that player regains form and ages gracefully then he's hit a homerun. If it goes the other way.....well we've been set back drastically. Still, he advanced the window trading for JT and moving all those 2nd round picks early in his tenure.
Realistically how much would a super awesome Linden Vey meant to the franchise? Bear cheese? I'd say at the minimum now you'd expect a top 4 D or top 6 forward out of those two picks ( one player) with a drafting guru in place. That's 1 less 1st traded to fill a gap.
Instead, we have another gap created down the line. Maybe he can work his way out of it IF this roster pans out. However, the pipeline is running dry again and we've been drafting top 5-10 for nearly a decade.

I think that's a pretty big ask out of any GM. RHD are usually more difficult to acquire and we want to move a $6M lefty for say a $3M righty? What kind of draft capital will that cost both players being equal? |

Did he say wether or not it's because they weren't good enough? Cuz i'd think you'd graduate your prospects to the NHL level and draft replacements rather then trade picks for roster players and lose your prospects. Just trying to think outside the box? |

It's quite possible, but if it happens it should be much more painless. At least assets at the time should not have NMC's and be of value. Or, we'll lose them all as UFA's. |

Grilled lamb sirloins last night with a mustard, garlic & thyme sauce and enjoyed a Carmenere from Chile. You must be double Pfizer, waterfront is pretty elitist. |

Could we have been better with the players that would have been picked with the picks traded away? Maybe? The problem is that at some point you have to say we drafted our main core, now is the time to surround them with the talent they need to succeed. Edmonton and Buffalo have had multiple top first/second/third round picks in the last 10 years and still haven't broken through the first round. You have Eichel, Reinhart and others who've been high 1st round picks wanting out. It doesn't take much for player to get fed up with waiting for help before they want to go elsewhere.
You can argue that JB's never been able to find that talent but at least he's not saying, oh well, we suck so let's just continue to suck until we draft our way out of suckage and trade all our assets for more draft picks. That's a recipe for disaster too just like what we've got now. |
