Hart is a 22 year old kid that was under siege from the opening bell, and Hayes was hurt with an abdominal injury that required off season surgery. Yet in your mind these were the two worst players in the Flyers last year? Not a healthy Patrick with a -31 +/-? Or Myers who was completely lost for the entire season and scratched multiple times? Or Hagg who was healthy scratched by the worst defensive team in the league? Or Ghost who literally looked like a turn style on his own blue line night after night? Really? - jd250
Myers wasn't under siege from the opening bell?

If Giroux has a 70 point season which is possible, he's taking a discount? - MJL
If he has 70 points do you see him making the same salary?

I will answer for him...no he has no family, he just woke up under a tree one day and became a Flyer fan. - Glak18
If I know the guy, he will suddenly get real cautious, give a guarded answer, provoke a burst of good will and energy from me (like, misguided prof energy: surely if I explain properly, he will get it), then he will dip for the day.
Then, tomorrow, he will argue with me about the EXACT same thing.
So, until the guy tells me whether he has aunts or uncles or cousins, I am not playing this game. |

I want to jump in on this....
I will bet MJL's car that RR's possession metrics are dramatically better this year!
Take the bet! - Glak18

I could see frost more in a 2C, offensive opportunities. Hayes as a 3c with some defensive zone starts or against bigger lines.
As it site right now, with those two, Couturier, and Laughton we are not in a bad position at Center. My concern is Winger depth.
Would lines look something like this?
G Couts Allison
JVR Frost Atkinson
Farabee Hayes Konecny
Lindblom Laughton NAK - MrPerfect316
G Couts TK
Farabee Hayes Atkinson
JVR Frost/UFA Allison
Lindblom Cates Laughton (can he play RW?) |

I think our Flyers have serious potential this year now. Stanley Cup potential? Not likely, but look at the Habs who just made it to the dance. Our defense is absolutely loaded. Our top 9 is very capable and Carter Hart will have a bounce back year. I truly think the 3 guys we brought it (Ellis, Risto, Cam) all have chips on their shoulders and will come to camp ready to go. Cam is a really interesting acquisition because he’s close with Hayes Laughton and JVR. One thing that severely was missed was the relaxing and fun candor our locker room had last season when We saw Hayes fit right in the year prior. Our team needs to get that swagger back from 19-20. I’m very excited for this season. - arichardson22
I think there are a five things that have to happen in order for the Flyers to have Cup potential:
1. Hart needs to rebound a big way
2. The Flyers need to be healthy
3. Farabee needs to have a break out season
4. TK, Hayes and Atkinson need to return to previous form
5. There has to be a pleasant surprise in the lineup, whether it come from Frost, Allison or another player like this. |

I don't believe that Giroux will command the same cap hit on his next deal but I also don't think he's going to take a discount to the level that others are thinking about and what has been posted. - MJL
I don't either, if I had to guess (keep in mind if you don't agree than cool, but it's MY guess) I would say between both Giroux and Couturier they will be extended between 14-15 million. The term I have no clue. |

The Flyers have several young players on their roster now: Hart, TK, Sanheim, Provorov, Allison, Frost, Farabee, York, Lindblom, NAK and Laczynski. They also have good young players banging at the door or will soon will be: Zamula, Foerster, O'Brien, Wisdom, Ratcliff, Sandin, Kase, Cates, Sandstrom etc. How many young prospects does a team need? And don't forget the Flyers just added another what, 6 prospects to their system. They have enough right now, the cupboards are overflowing! The Flyers need balance, they need veteran leaders, they need toughness, they need more skill, grit, and speed. I don't devalue picks, I look at the reality of where this team is now, and picks are not as valuable right now compared to getting players that can actually play and win games.
When Hextall joined the Flyers as GM, their cupboards were empty, so it made sense that Hextall values draft picks more. But now is a different time, and this org is in a different position. - jd250
I like the part where MJL says Risto is aging lol |

Right and what happens when good young players excel and need new contracts? We'll be in a cap crunch with veteran overpaid players who were obtained just to get better rather than moves made to actually become a top team in the league. - MJL
What happens when they don't excel?

I know that Fletcher said his fourth line was to young. They needed them to play a traditional checking line to shut down top six players but couldn’t handle the workload.
I read before your ideas of rolling 4 competitive lines and always liked the sound of it.
I guess watching the vets take over in the playoffs every year makes me think Chuck is on to something. - peesinwind
I think the Flyers need some size and grit in their forward group, and I think Fletcher knows it. That is what he will address in FA. |

Im curious on the original post from MJL, how do the 1st and 2nd round picks have more potential than our recently aquired players? Is there stats or something that back that up, or just an opinion. - bradster
Yeah this argument is ridiculous. Always draft and develop and god forbid you use one of those complete unknowns for known talent. But then again in his eyes we will never be close enough to a cup to ever make a move. |

What will happen is the same thing that happened this year, Fletcher will make deals and open up space to sign the younger players. I mean no one thought Jake could be traded without giving up picks and prospects, but he was. No one thought Ghost could be traded unless we gave up a 1st round pick, but he was. I don't know about you, but I am getting older. It would be nice to see the Flyers actually win something before I fall off a cliff someday.
What many fail to see here is this all fallout from Hextall missing on his draft picks. If Hextall had drafted Makar like he was supposed to, it would be the Flyers who were signing him for 8 years instead of Colorado. But instead, its the Flyers trading top picks and players to fix their bad defense with good players. So it all comes back to one thing, you MUST hit on your draft picks, especially the higher ones if you want to contend for many years. |
