Well 7 experts in the field were at least willing to part with a 1rst round pick…so maybe it’s not us that needs to re evaluate what analytics actually are and how they are used. If Risto is so bad how could these guys all be wrong ? Then again there are those 2 journalism majors that appear to have it all figured out.
- landros 2
Well, that's certainly relevant info. But I guess what I can say is: WHY they were willing to do so is not clear at all.
Many explanations are possible. If your argument is that seven teams apparently offered a first so they must be right, fair enough, that argument cannot be refuted by definition, so I will not try.
Generally speaking though, if a player is a good player, in today's age it is pretty easy to find stats to support it. In this case, you can't find stats, at least the ones in common use. Perhaps there are proprietary stats which will show otherwise. |

Did you guys notice that G called out Sam on Twitter about his confirming that G would remain captain?
Sam responded. Wow. There’s certainly animosity between some members of the press and some of the team. - Hextall271
I took it as good natured sarcasm and thought it was pretty funny. When hasn’t there been animosity between players and the press? |

What about Holtby with 2 million retained by VNC.? - landros 2
I saw that "rumor", but when it comes to Holtby and the situation Vancouver is in to clear cap space for Pettersson, Hughes and Garland...I want retained salary AND an asset for that to happen. |

No thanks. He wants to be the #1 goalie wherever he lands. Holtby hasn't realized he's no longer a #1. |

His response says it all. If not upset why even bother responding to a lowly beat writer? I get it Captain Comfortable is your hero. - hello it's me 2050
Moving the goal posts huh, is Sam a lowly beat writer or essentially a main contributor for the Philadelphia Flyers? We get so much national attention that Sam is a small fry right? |

If the Flyers re-sign Morin I am curious to see how the dynamic is with Risto and Sam in the lineup at the same time. I really don't want Morin to be "he's only there to fight" guy, but having that presence could be good, especially when Risto is getting physical and Konecny is yapping. - Glak18
I like Morin. Had a tough go with the injuries and being drafted so high. Put a lot of pressure on him. But I have always liked that way he has handled it. Did what ever the franchised asked him to do with a positive attitude. Heck. He even played wing for a hot minute.
He has some raw abilities for sure. Needs to play some and won’t make it through waivers this year so needs some line up time.
My guess is he will spot York out a lot on that third pair to lighten York’s workload. He will get some time in this year. |

I'm not sure of the complete backstory, and there definitely has to be one, but stepping into Giroux's shoes he is probably thinking "Thanks Captain Obvious". - Glak18
Based on what the GM said it was a legit question imo. |

I think our Flyers have serious potential this year now. Stanley Cup potential? Not likely, but look at the Habs who just made it to the dance. Our defense is absolutely loaded. Our top 9 is very capable and Carter Hart will have a bounce back year. I truly think the 3 guys we brought it (Ellis, Risto, Cam) all have chips on their shoulders and will come to camp ready to go. Cam is a really interesting acquisition because he’s close with Hayes Laughton and JVR. One thing that severely was missed was the relaxing and fun candor our locker room had last season when We saw Hayes fit right in the year prior. Our team needs to get that swagger back from 19-20. I’m very excited for this season. |

That's what I find interesting about re-signing Morin. He seems like a genuinely good person and will look at what needs to help the team before himself. Having someone who is versatile that can fill a wing spot or LD could be very helpful. Plus his attitude could be just as helpful. I don't think he will be a star, but after seeing how he handled everything last year I would bring him back for his intangibles alone. |

Poor Clode got called out and didn't like it. What shame. Probably still fuming Robin was traded.

FWIW, my thoughts on the draft/trade
The draft
Nothing really stands out to me as particularly good or bad though I do like the Finnish winger they took with their 2nd round pick. Most scouts and sites that I follow weren’t that impressed with this draft class and, once you factor in the Covid effect, it’s more of a crapshoot than usual.
The Ghost trade
I get why they had to do it, but it still frustrates me that Fletcher put himself in the position that forced him to make this deal.
The Risto trade
Yeah, it’s not a great draft but I stil don’t like moving first round picks in deals for useful, but not game changing, players. Personally, I don’t hate Risto as much as the analytic junkies but I don’t like him as much as Bill seems to. One codicil, if he does end up walking than this deal will go down as a disaster and that makes me afraid that he will use that leverage to get a deal that costs too much over too many years.
The Voracek deal
Don’t love it, don’t hate it. Freeing up a little cap space is nice and, due to the lack of bonuses, Atkinson would be relatively easy buyout in comparison to Jake. I can’t really judge this until I see how Atkinson plays this year. One thing about Jake though, love him or hate him, he rarely misses a game and he puts up points. That kind of durability and consistency isn’t easy to find.
Goalie
Please Chuck, stay far away from Holtby. A lot of teams seem to be looking for a goaltender so this might be tricky. Hopefully we can lead a decent one without too much of an overpay.
Overall, I’m not thrilled with the off-season so far, but I don’t hate it. I will say this though. If this team craps the bed in 21-22, it’s time for a new GM, new coaching staff and a complete rebuild. |

No one is debating the question...the fact Sam had to create a tweet to tell everyone what they already know was the point of Giroux's response. Basically thanks, shouldn't you be reporting on something important now. |

I would not be averse to instead of forming a traditional 4th line that they form a youthful energy line that is more offensive. Of course there are issues with that to consider. - MJL
I know that Fletcher said his fourth line was to young. They needed them to play a traditional checking line to shut down top six players but couldn’t handle the workload.
I read before your ideas of rolling 4 competitive lines and always liked the sound of it.
I guess watching the vets take over in the playoffs every year makes me think Chuck is on to something. |

Probably the same reason he didn't want to play for 28-29 other teams. |
